This black-vested doorman stands here trying to smile. ~
This heavy-set doorman holds a silver tray out to you for your calling
card. Although he wears white silk gloves and a fine black suit, when he
shifts his weight you notice a slight limp. It is not likely he received
that in the course of clearing tables.

scene~
In brush-strokes so sure, a corner of a subterranean room is depicted so
realistically as to appear you are looking through a window into a forgotten
cellar. In this scene a human-like creature of such revolting appearance as
to evoke your primitive instincts of flight and terror stands grinning over
a bundle of bloody rags clutched in its mishappen hands. Looking closely at
the painting against your will, you see the rags to be what they truly are,
the broken body of a small child. This creature has been feeding upon it.
This picture has been framed, and a small brass plaque is fastened to the
frame's base.

This book is filled with a fine, elegant script that is nearly
unintelligible. Whether the ramblings of a madman or the glimpse
into the mind of dark genius, the journal entry depicts horrific
sacrifices, cannabalism, and rites to ancient gods from some distant
and dark dimension. One particular passage, striking for its
incomparable clarity, details a trip through a portal to the
Dark Gods:
...and descending into the sixth pit under the darkness visible
cast from the new moon, I uttered the sacred words 'Glit nifdon ral
Nefarum'and entered the Arch of Darkness to touch my goddess, and
she did unto me grant a mighty boon, as unworthy though I might
be. From that day on I am her slave and servant, her mortal general,
and I shall do all in my power to bring her back through the portal
to this sphere, and by her hand be thus exalted over all Creation.

The journal continues on, detailing dark arts and darker deeds, and after
you have read your fill, you have gleaned a rather complete knowledge of
the current Baron of Exham.

Priory Foyer~
As the towering doors swing ponderously closed behind you, you catch the
first glimpse of Exham Priory. Although remodeled recently, the corrupting
influence of its ancient architecture has permeated the veneer of modern
splendor with a seeping melancholy spirit that pervades every pore and crack
of its wood and stone. The structure itself defies the intellect to cleanly
categorize its origins, but the discerning eye can see Gothic and Romanesque
techniques at work, and legends hint that the Priory of 1261 was built upon
foundations of Roman make, which likewise had been erected upon a druidic or
Cymric temple. A worn ribbon of tattered red carpet stretches ahead of you.

Servant's Wing~
The servants quarters are only slightly better decorated than the drab
utility hallway to the south, but even so the extent of the de la Poer
financial success is evident in the details. A rug spans the length of the
hallway, the salvaged carpet from the priory's entrance a few years ago.
Gold embossed mirrors, too out of fashion for the noble chambers, adorn the
walls and give a light and life to the corridor. The hallway extends to the
east, and a stairwell leads up.

Here the hallway terminates in a grand portrait of some demented
depiction of a hell on earth. Streams of demonic figures pour out of a
portal in the air as storm clouds and lightning split the sky, as if

scrabbling toward the heavens. The painting would be quite frightening, but
the artist rendering it in such lifelike detail was too obviously mad for
