Since there is no connection check or crawler that the listings here use and its based solely on people submitting, there should probably be some way for users of the site to flag MUDs that appear to be dead, whether it just simply be a "Flag this MUD as dead" button in the listings or whatnot.

I don't know if there's a way to automate it where doing so will automatically notify the listing's owner, and if they don't log in and address it, the MUD is removed from the listing, but I would also suggest that only once every X weeks (2-4) that the button actually do anything, to prevent abuse of the system.

What brought this to mind for me (other than the corresponding thread on TMC about its issue with defunct MUDs) is "Land of Legends" is currently in the "Top 10 MUDs" on the front page, and well… yeah, that MUD is gone.

There's no telling how many others listed here are as well.

I used to have a perl script that grabbed the mud list from TMC and then walked each MUD, attempting to telnet to them and grab their login screen, storing it in a database for display, and marking unreachable ones as disabled.

You can see the results here. http://71.89.162.105/~bloodlines/mudlist...

I haven't run it in years, and it probably doesn't work properly as the page structure has likely changed (or may not even be there anymore)… but such a setup could easily be added to mudbytes. The source for it should be available in one of my github repositories…

I think that's all of it.
