I think Smaug supports RIP images, but I don't know of any clients that support it.

AVATAR's main utility seems to be to conserve bandwidth, which isn't that big of an issue nowadays.

As far as I know the average BBS doesn't support any special protocols.

One odd little thing I ran across some weeks ago is FANSI.
