But I recent ran across "Fargate Mud Client", http://fargate.korsoft.com/wiki/Client, which seems to be almost identical except with a few less features…but its open source.
Is Fmud based off of Fargate?
If so, why isn't Fmud open source? Fargate is GPL.
Fargate looks much nicer in default than Fmud… Fmud's new versions looks much worse than its old version…
But, I don't know…does anyone know if the two projects are connected?
If you look at the dates on the Wiki for Fargate, the earliest page is on July 08, FMud was released in May.
Other than that, it kind of seems to me like you're leaping to a potentially unfair conclusion. The display elements for both clients are what I would consider bare-bones basic, hard to draw a case for potential theft there. I guess the question is what do you mean by almost identical? Isn't that true of most MUD clients in that they pretty much all do the same basic things?
Lastly, if you take both developers at their word, Fargate is using Flex (which for some reason I've also seen referenced in Java books) and FMud is using ActionScript directly. They both boil down to the same thing, really, but it's worth noting because the programming approach is different - like using XAML for GUI rather than pure C#, in .NET speak. (Actually it's almost exactly like that =x)
Anyway, it's all moot unless FMud's creater shares his code, which - frankly - he doesn't need to.
Up until recently I hadn't even heard of those
Doesn't seem to be a lot of cross-platform Telnet clients nowadays, guess it depends on what you want to do with it? I'm guessing embed it into your website.
No, FMud is not related to the Fargate client. The reason they look similar is that they are both built with the Flex framework using its default theme and widget set.
I don't know why you'd post here for an answer when you could have just emailed me and asked. Also, if you tell me what you didn't like about the last version of FMud I can see if I can change it, although if it was the line spacing that has been fixed in the latest version.
Ok, so, I'm hoping someone can try this and let me know if they reproduce it or if I'm just crazy.
I've set up a connection page that uses the flash client and it works just fine for Flashplayer 9, and for Flashplayer 10 on Windows.
But when I try to use the connection page with Flashplayer 10 on Firefox in Linux, the client hangs after the first connection.
I've tried it on three separate Linux boxes, all of them behave the same. Flash 9 good, Flash 10 hang. It also happens on the Mudgamers connection pages.
Can someone please try to use the client on this page:
using Flashplayer 10 on Firefox on Linux and tell me if you hang after the first connect? If it's just something I'm screwing up at least I can stop worrying about it!
