Hey All,
I've been puttering away on this thing for awhile and I have an update coming. I'm not sure when the next one will be so I want to make sure I address as much as I can. At this point I've got most of what I can fiddle with, so this post will serve two purposes. One to announce the coming changes, and the other to request some feed back.

Now I know this launch has not been smooth. Some would say an utter failure. I am still in love with the forum software I've written. I think it's awesome. So in the upcoming update (closer to the end of this month/early Oct) the pastebin and wiki will both be restored, as well as private messages. Certain fonts in the forum sections will be toned down to accommodate longer topic titles and look less clunky. The site contributors on the front page will begin updating again, and hopefully I've fixed the sticky of arholly at the top. There is currently a javascript monero miner running on the site. It runs on the lowest setting (my cpu hits 400h/s with a complete miner, and 15h/s on MB). The update will include options to turn off the miner but currently html templates update before the code, so the miner is running but wont be able to be turned off until the server reboots. I'm mostly doing this because I'm enjoying playing with the blockchain technology. This will likely amount to next to nothing, as running for 24h at 15h/s will net roughly $0.02. However, I'll likely always have a MB window open now!

Next part. Is there anything glaring I'm missing?

Thank you in advance!

Files downloaded have single quotes surrounding their names.

My main feedback is the search on the files section doesn't seem to work. There's a text box for it, it doesn't seem to post on enter, have a submit button or do any ajax callbacks.

I may have fixed it! Things got a little crazy and turns out our server was still running Ubuntu 12. We're now on the latest Ubuntu and Django. I'm hoping this fixed it. It downloads properly on linux with Chrome and Firefox, as well as with wget.

Fingers crossed!

It's only Firefox on Windows that adds the single quotes.
If you use Edge, Chrome or Brave on Windows the file names are correct.

Seems like you're not just mining for crypto on your mudbytes server, you're also (attempting) to mine for bitcoin with a javascript miner on ours as well.

https://cl.ly/401s3k2M1i0U

Virus/maleware scanners will block this and is gonna get mudbytes sandboxed on search engines.

Can't figure out how to embed images here anymore. Maybe that's something else that's broken.

I never stated I was running it on this server. I stated it was in the javascript on the html templates. Javascript (with the exception of node.js) is always run client side. Sorry, I figured that much was obvious. And just surround it in <img> tags (use square brackets) like any other bbcode on most forums.

Yet another reason to use noScript…

I guess so. It doesn't really cost you anything or harm your computer. It's not like this is a get rich quick scheme to buy lambos of MB traffic. I'm simply exploring the new technology. If you're curious, since running, it's been steadily mining, and has generated just shy of $3 in XMR. At current rate, I should get a free month of hosting next year… if the difficulty doesn't skyrocket.

I would never implement anything on this site that's a threat to the users. The option to turn it off is still coming, I just had to hold it back to upgrade the server, and haven't had time to merge the two repos. Some stuff has made it through but again, it's mostly just HTML changes.

Raise the energy consomption, the heat, making the fan turn, causing noise (that I hate, I have a perfectly silent laptop with no fan turning when cpu power is not used constantly).
Yes it costs me. As well as showings ads do cost me.
Not a lot, I agree. But still.

That's just not true. It absolutely does cost users something – and it costs them more in energy and headache than you gain in crypto. On mobile devices it can prevent the device from going into a lower power use state. It's bad enough that virus scanners are now considering it malware.

Considering the implications to mudbytes reputation with search engines and its users (especially when anyone coming to your site has their virus scanners triggered), I just can't really imagine what must be going through your mind put something on your site that generates so little revenue other than just not caring anymore.

I fail to see the headaches… it's throttled so low that the CPU usage is comparable to using google maps, or other graphically intensive programs. The average visit to mudbytes is around 45 seconds. This would barely register on any meter. I of course care about MudBytes, I just care vary little about other peoples opinions. I've made that -pretty- clear over the last decade!

I absolutely love the blockchain technology, and the way people are using it. I'm especially in love with the delegated proof of stake systems out there. There are very simple options to not have to deal with it right now, that are out there. A few have been mentioned in this thread! If you can't wait for the option to turn it off, I don't know what to tell you.

You really do not understand: I use the net mostly to read: my cpu is then throttled to like 600mhz…it is totally silent. (well not really true, I do hear the electronics whining)
The very fact to open a new tab IS making the cpu go to 100% not to mention that to actually be able to not crawl to a tortoise, I use noscript and adblock otherwise my cpu would be 100% all the time.
I do NOT use graphically intensive programs, and I definitely feel it when I use google maps.

Dunno what computer you use, but mine while not being that powerless (it is a thinkpad W500) using the net without turning off all the useless bell and whistle and other crypto mining has been really annoying for a while. And all for nothing, because fuck it I very well remember the time when I could do it with & P2 233 and 512 meg of ram, and I do not see ANY differences in the info quality.
If I want to see videos, I go on youtube or vimeo, but then there is sound to cover my fan…

I like my computer silent. Thank you.

I've come across quite a few articles about this cryptojacking technology lately:
https://www.wired.com/story/cryptojackin...

Consensus summary among infosec professionals thus far seems to be:
1) It's malware and should be classified as such by scanners and search engines
2) It's unethical to run this on a website without user consent

If that is the case i will stop frequenting this site… which is a shame as its the only mud site that has snippets these days….

Did wonder why my pc never went into sleep mode when i had mudbytes open… i now know!

I removed the Miner a few days ago while working on one of my other sites, so there's no need to worry! The rewards were so insubstantial and the payout was so far down the road it would never be worth it. The idea was to have an interface that allowed users to start, stop, throttle and share in the rewards, but it'd never be realistic.

Edit: It appears Django now requires me to restart Apache to update templates, so it lingered. Should definitely be gone now.
