Sometimes you pay 10+ tax, and get an awful lot back in the form of other government benefits, like functional public transportation, health insurance, unemployment benefits, bla bla bla. It's relatively rare that a developed country will these days charge you a bucket load more in taxes simply for the sake of it without any benefits elsewhere.
