#4300 Under the Leaning Post Inn~ You stand in a small room dug into the earth under the common room of the Leaning Post Inn. Dust and noise filter down from the room above. You would guess (given the neighborhood you're in) that thieves use this to escape the city guard. A roughly man-sized hole has been knocked in the foundation to the west. A cool, damp breeze blows in through it. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4301 D4 ~ trapdoor up u~ 1 3099 3048 S #4301 The Catacombs~ The air is cool, and humid here. This area has been hewn out of solid rock. Tool marks on the rough walls atest to the efforts of whomever built this place. Sounds of drunken merriment can be heard faintly from the east. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4300 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4302 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4304 S #4302 The Catacombs~ The feel of this place is oppresive. Niches carved into the walls of this room hold broken bits of wood, and rotting pieces of what was once fine cloth. You would expect that these are the graves of people long dead. You notice that there is not a single shard of bone to be found. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4301 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4303 S #4303 The Catacombs~ This was obviously a tomb for some weathly family of ancient Kortaal. Several rusting sconces hold rotting hunks of wood that may have been torches. Bits of corroding metal, rotting wood, and decaying cloth are everywhere. The only thing that seems out of place is the complete lack of any human remains. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4304 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4302 S #4304 An Undergroud Intersection~ You enter a crossroads of sorts. Tunnels lead off in the four cardinal directions. Metal plaques above each of the rough archways once read with the names of the most ancient families in Kortaal. Now they are so badly rusted as to be indecipherable. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4305 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4301 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4303 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4307 S #4305 A Family Crypt~ You can tell that the appointments of this room were once very luxurious. Now however, they are nothing but tattered cloth and useless junk. You can't help but wonder why there are no bones. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4304 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4306 S #4306 Tomb of the Patriarch~ This area is bigger than the other crypts you've encountered down here. The walls here have been worked smooth, and are covered floor to ceiling in huge bas-relief depictions of a forest. On a low platform in the middle of the room, sit the remains of single stone sarcophagus. Larger chunks of it lay upon on the dias, with smaller pieces scattered to the four corners of the room. Like the others, this crypt is devoid of remains. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4305 S #4307 A narrow Passage~ The walls are close here, and the ceiling rather low. There is an archway carved into the south wall, but it is only about two feet deep. It appears that a crypt was planned for here, but never completed. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4304 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4308 S #4308 A dark tunnel~ It is close and damp here. The rough hewn walls sparkle with condensation, and thin puddles have developed in low spots on the floor. On the northern and southern walls shallow archways have been cut. Only about two foot deep, they suggest that whoever planned this place never saw to it's completion. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4307 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4310 S #4309 A small alcove~ You stand in a small room dominated by a large statue. It is roughly human in shape, but has been defaced so badly that any details have been lost. The head is missing completely. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4310 S #4310 A rough tunnel~ You stand in a passage carved from bedrock. The walls are heavey with tool marks. The stonework on the archway to the south is of much finer quality in comparison to the rest. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4308 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4309 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4311 S #4311 A tunnel~ You are in a dark tunnel. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4310 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4312 S #4312 Entrance to a Crypt~ The stonework of this area is exquisite. Only master Dwarven craftsmen do such fine work. An archway to the north once held a sturdy door. The hinges hang rusting from the stone. The door itself seems to have decayed long ago. Sigils for peace and protection have been lovingly carved over all the exits ~ 43 ade 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4313 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4311 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4322 S #4313 A Small Burial Chamber~ While not as large as some of the other crypts, this room is much nicer than most. The Dwarven stone work of the entrance is apparent here also, and delicate reliefs line the walls. The ceiling is domed, and flakes of paint hint that it once held large fresca. Someone spent a lot of money to make the departed comfortable here. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4312 S #4314 A dead end~ Here the natural cavern pinches to an end. Water runs down the gentle slope of the floor to a small hole near the southern end. With your ear to the hole you can just make out the sound of the water splashing on rock some distance below. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4315 S #4315 A natural cavern~ The passage widens briefly here, becoming a full fledged cave. The floor slopes to the south gently, and water runs along it in thin rivulets. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4316 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4314 S #4316 Deep Underground~ You stand at an intersection of natural passages deep in the earth. The floor slopes gently towards the southern exit. Water runs along it in several thin trickles. A faint breeze blows in from the east. It seems strange that it should be warm and dry. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4317 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4315 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4336 S #4317 A Huge Cavern~ You stand at the top of a monsterous chamber. The ceiling is perhaps ten feet overhead. The opposite wall is nearly fifty feet away. You cannot see the bottom. A path has been carved into the wall, and spirals down at a steep angle. Thanks to the sulphor laden breeze that billows from the depths, the path remains dry. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4321 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4316 S #4318 Near the bottom~ You can see the bottom of the cavern now. The floor is smooth and shiny. It looks like the rock has been melted. A gaping fissure bisects it, and a gentle glow can be seen within. The air is thick with noxious fumes. The path cointines to spiral down south. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4319 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4320 S #4319 Futher down the spiral~ The smell of sulphor is very strong here. You have a grown sense of anxiety as you can no longer see the ceiling, and still cannot see the floor. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4321 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4318 S #4320 The Bottom~ The floor here is smooth as glass, and just as reflective. You realize you could use a hair cut. The air is hazy and hot. Probably a result of the large fissure in the center of the room, which vomits forth noxious vapors and wave after wave of heat. Your eyes burn and it's hard to breath because of the stink of sulphor. A path rises up to the north and you spot an opening to the east. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 4318 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4338 S #4321 Down the spiral~ As you move down the path, you realize that there are no tool marks anywhere. All of them have decayed into useless junk. Judging by the numbers buried in such a small area, this was were the poor were laid to rest. They are lined with alcoves for burial. There is almost nothing but dust here, as people buried in this place can rarley afford a casket. There must be a thousand such alcoves here. A quick inspection shows not a shard of bone among any of them. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 4323 S #4325 A public burial chamber~ There are many alcoves here. The dampness of this place makes it a poor choice for burial, and almost nothing remains of the caskets and coffins that filled the niches. Anything of value has been long since pillaged. Strangely you can't find any remains. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4323 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4326 S #4326 An intersection~ You stand at an intersection. Now it is hoplessly lost. ~ 43 ad 0 0 0 0 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4328 S #4330 A Bricked passage~ You are in a long north-south passage. The walls here have been bricked over with marble blocks. The large sarcophagus appears to never have been used. A giant stone slab forms the roof of this room. It's entire length is smooth and reflective. Patterns of light and shadow stream across the convex surface, mingling with your own distorted image. The source would seem to be a tiny pinprick of light hundreds of yards east, and down. The reek of sulfer drifts to you from the west. ~ 43 dir 0 0 0 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 4339 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 4320 S #4339 An immense cavern~ This cavern streaches hundreds of feet above you. The floor must be a couple of square miles in area. The walls and domed cieling have been cut into millions of geometric shapes. The facets range in size from a few inches to several feet, and each one has been meticulously polished. The eastern reaches of this chamber are dominated by a vast chasm. Brilliant light erupts from it's depths. Shades of deepest crimson, and gold dance along the faceted walls. The entire cavern is awash in intricate patterns of of light and dark. The effect is quite disturbing. Just to the north is a small stone hut.A feww hunred feet to the east sits a small white tower. It is composed entirely of human bone. Every inch of the thing stands stark and white, remaining entirly unaffected by the dancing lights around it. As you approach light bursts from the four upper windows. It flashes randomly through a kalidascope of colors. The lights return from the facected walls to center on this spot. The result is a most mindnumbing display of light all around you.
