This is basically just the stock low4 code with all of it's standard bugs still intact. This isn't a bugfix release, I just got tired of the only copies of this code requiring so much work just to get it to startup. Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to correct all of the errors and warnings that pop up with gcc 4.3.2 since that is the latest version available at this time. Like I said before, this is not a bugfix release, so there is still plenty of work for you to do before this is really player ready. There are no features in this release of the LOW4 code that aren't already in the other versions which are the only ones available at this time. There is however my custom makefile which is a lot better than the standard boring old makefile (In my opinion). There is a help document on this makefile in the doc directory as well. The IMC support was removed due to the fact that the IMC code in the original LOW4 release is outdated and very buggy. I removed a few other files that are in the original release but weren't even being compiled in the original makefile and were therefore useless. To get this mud started up all you need to do is go to the src directory and edit the startup script to set the port number to your chosen port. Then in merc.h search for MAIN_PORT and change that number to your port number. Then edit the file kav_wiz.c in the do_relevel function where you see sage and tijer and order and NONAME. Put your character's name in there somewhere and your other imp's names in as well, you should be able to figure this part out on your own. Save the file, blah blah, all that. Then type make. Wait for it to compile, admire the pretty colors and lack of errors and warnings. When the compile completes type the following commands: cp merc.exe ../area make install ./startup & The reasons for doing this are further explained in the makefile.readme file in the doc directory. Once the mud starts up, log in with your character, type relevel and then save. You now have a LOW4 code running and an IMP level character. From this point on you are on your own. I'm a pretty lazy guy so I'm not going to make a list of all the fixes I made to the code to get it to work for gcc 4.3.2 but rest assured they have all been tested out. This code is no more and no less buggy than the original release. If you need any further assistance in getting this code up and running, you probably shouldn't be trying to run a mud quite yet, but if you're still determined to jump into this with no knowledge of programming then I reccomend you try the forums at either www.mudbytes.net or www.godwars.net. Godwars.net is probably more well suited for help on this codebase, but mudbytes.net is full of helpful people as well. All of my work is released with no restrictions on it at all except that you don't claim it as your own. You can even delete this file after you've read it for all I care. You don't need to credit me in a help file or on the greeting screen. You don't have to email me to tell me you're using it. I'm not giving out my email address anyway so you couldn't even if you wanted to. I do have one request. That request is that you release at least a small snippet of your own work. For any codebase, it doesn't matter. My goal is to get more people contributing to the mudding community. This would benefit all of us greatly. Best of luck with this mess of code, -Igabod- P.S. Take a look at the code repository on mudbytes.net and you'll find a few snippets of mine for low4 as well as many other people's work for just about every codebase you can think of.
