Ryan, just wanted to toss a couple things your way, but didn't feel they
were significant enough to toss to the entire list...

> tribulations each level or trial has to offer. And in the end, I know that
> everything I accomplished or acquired was through my own hardships and
> conquerings thereof. I have a pride in myself (RL) as well as my character.

Yeah, I sense very little pride in character (let alone association with it)
in those types of people. But then I'm EAS on the scale... I still remember
with disgust the one player who was twinked to a high level and knew pretty
much nothing on her own... She was stuck in the middle of one of my quests,
not a particularly hard one that can be done at level 1.. anyway.. she
spammed our pray channel and when I went to help her she ignored me, even
with several tells sent asking what the problem was and how could I help.
She claimed, "I thought you were a mob." *BOGGLE* Guess in all those times
logging in, she never noticed my name as implementor on the title screen or
at the top of the who list. Silly twinks.

>> So twinking, to a point, actually extends player longevity. Now, if your
>> game system is such that someone being twinked basically runs through all
> of
>> your game data in a far shorter timespan, then leaves, then yes, you have
> a
>> problem. But that means that the problem lies with your game system, and
> not
>> with the very natural tendency of humans to assist friends who are less
>> fortunate.
>
> I disagree with this overall. Let me turn this around a little bit.
>
> "Does average Joe Gamer consistantly 'complete', 'finish', or 'win' the
> majority of single-player titles he/she owns if the difficulty level exceeds
> his/her _initial_ skill level?"
>
> In other words, does average Joe Gamer rise to the occassion and improve
> him/her-self as necessary? Or does Joe Gamer quit, pack up their toys and
> go home?

Or do they go search the net for cheat codes/walk throughs. =) And breeze
through the rest of the game. =P

> If to the former one answers "yes", twinking will not extend longevity since
> Joe Gamer will not quit until they have overcome the impediment to their
> progress.
>
> If to the latter one answers "yes", you cannot help Joe Gamer unless you
> provide them a dedicated baby-sitter.

This is one of the points where Raph and I disagreed when I asked him about
it. I really detest the "Gimme" players... I really don't get the "I want
someone else to play this game for me" mentality I've seen in several of our
players. It's as foreign to me as the "I just logged into a multiplayer
game, now leave me the hell alone so I can play by myself" attitude.

> "Help" _should_ primarily involve knowledge and social association.

Goes to that idea of teach a man to fish and he'll be fed for life deal...
I see too many new players walking around clueless of where to find their
next fish.
