The bobcat sneaks along the ground, carefully not to scare it's prey. 
It's yellow eyes capture every movement in the area, and it's ears are erect
to any sound.  Letting out a small hiss, you see the razor sharp fangs, and
paws that hide deadly claws.  It will feed on almost any animal it can
catch, and looking at it, it catches a lot.  It considers you with it's
eyes, and decide to wait until you lie dead on the ground.

&OA large bear roars at you for upsetting it's sleep.

This huge bear's thick fur is almost as black as night.  Foam drips from
it's mouth as it growls at you, showing you it's huge mouth with rows of
sharp fangs.  It's enormous paws could kill a deer in one blow, and standing
up on two feet, it ranges high over an average man.  It's dark eyes display
hunger and anger, and it will not hesitate to kill you.

Along the East Wall~
&GHere on the west side of the vale, trees grow everywhere.  Shrubs,
trees and wildflowers colorfully accent the area.  All around you can hear
the sounds of the local wildlife, you even manage to catch a glimpse of a
deer as it bounds back deeper into the vale.  To the South a small trail can
be seen leading in an east-west direction.  A small path leads off to the
East, while the Northern path continues along the East Wall.

&GThis part of the Vale is all peaceful, the trees provide a pleasant

&GYou have reached the Northwest corner of the Vale.  To your north and
west huge trees with massive trunks form a barrier.  You most definitely
cannot make your way through them.  Over to the east you can see one tree
rising high above all the rest.  In the distance you can hear a bird call as
it flies off looking for food.

A Small Game Trail~

Deep in the Vale~
&GOn all sides trees loom above your head.  A comfortable breeze blows
through the leaves here, bringing up the scent of growing trees and moist
earth.  Off to your right you hear a branch snap, but when you turn to see
what caused it there's nothing in sight.  Over to the east you can see the
top of the big tree that rises above all the rest.

A Small Clearing~
&GEntering this part of the Vale the trees part slightly and a small
clearing becomes apparent.  Footprints of all types of creatures lead to a
natural &Bspring&G, flowing forth from the ground.  Looking around you can
see that whichever direction you choose to take will once again take you
back into the jungle of trees and undergrowth.

Deep in the Vale~

The South Side of the Vale~
&GHere on the south side of the vale the growth is the same as most
everywhere else.  Your way south is blocked by major undergrowth and trees
that grow so close their trunks almost connect.  Off to the north gurgling
sounds can be heard, along with the normal sounds of the wildlife that
inhabit the vale.  To the East you see the contours of a cliff.

Along the Road~
&GHere the game trail forms into a full fledged road.  The road heads
East toward the Fortress.  Looking more closely at the Fortress from your new
vantage point you can see a pair of large gates.  To the North, the path is
darkened by the shadow of a huge tree.  A path leads South.

The Huge Tree~
&GYou come upon a small glade dominated by probably the biggest &Ytree&G
you've ever seen.  It seems very quiet here, prompting you to look around. 
You notice no distinct activity or movement.

The Path~
&GHere on the Eastern side of the Vale, trees are as plentiful as dirt
and shrubs.  You see something fly by at great speed and fail to identify it
before it disappears in the foliage of a tree.  Off to your East the ground
becomes rocky, lacking any trees, containing all but a few scrawny shrubs. 
To the North the path merges into a road.

NorthEast Corner of the Vale~
&GIn this corner of the Vale a number of creatures are moving amongst the
trunks of the trees.  Upon your arrival they scatter to other parts of the
Vale.  Looking to the north more large trees and large quantities of
underbrush form an impassable barrier.  To the East a huge cliff rises up
towards the heavens and its sheer face offers you no purchase for climbing.

South.  To the West you can see the Vale.

Along the Cliff Wall~
&wHere on the side of the road there is a definite lack of greenery. 
Mostly rocks and sand are all that thrive here except for the single shrub
that has attached itself to the cliff wall and seems to eke out a pathetic

progress in that direction, while to the North the cliff breaks open into a
small pass.

On a Huge Branch~
&GStanding on a huge branch, you have a marvelous view of the Vale.  The
branch has a &Ytrapdoor&G in it which leads directly down to the base of the
tree.  To the East you see the most amazing walkway, carved directly into
the tree.  With a railing made of branches and thick ropes, it looks very
sturdy.

On the Tree Walkway~
&GLooking over the railing, you see that there is no way anybody could
see you up here, although you have an excellent view of the area below.  A
&Pcrossbow&G is mounted on the railing here, it is covered in cobwebs. 
Apparently whoever built this had some enemies, or was trying to protect
something.  The Walkway continues to the North.  To the West you see a huge
branch.

A Dark Cave~
&OYou stand in a somewhat large cave.  A heavy scent lingers through the

darkness.  As you move around you can hear an occasional crunch as you step

through the branches.  You notice an opening in the East.

A Bear Den~

A Covered Pass~

The Bunkhouse~

The Courtyard~
Here in the Courtyard all can mix and mingle with anyone else from the
Fortress with little or no thought for any social rank.  Nobles talk and
haggle with traders while guards instead of shooing beggars away give them a

away.

Tavern of the Sun~
&YThe staggering volume of people laughing and singing.  The smell of
food and wine fills the air.  All around people are drinking and having a

lamps and ale stains from the last brawl.  North you see the Courtyard.

to big plows.  Along the East wall, between the forge and the anvil, there
is a &Obucket&w of dirty water.  South you hear the chatter of traders and
customers.

A Cul-de-sac~
This is a small Cul-de-sac off of the Courtyard.  Walls bounds on the
East, West and South side.  It's much darker in here than it is out in the

The Carriage House~
This is the carriage house.  Josaph, the stable master, can sometimes be

A Small Niche~

between the walls of the Fortress and the Keep.

The Stables~
The stench is almost overwhelming, it seems the place hasn't had a good
cleaning in a number of days.  A number of stalls contain the Royal carriage
horses.  Along the stall walls there is a number of saddles, with the
associated harnesses, reins and bridles.  Flies buzz about, making the
horses flick with their tails.  The horses whinny softly as they feel a
presence.

A Dark Alley~
&gThis is a dead end.  Looking around you see nothing but stubby weeds
and pieces of trash that litter the ground.  The walls stand tall around

Bailey~
The Bailey is usually occupied by one or more guards, who check in on
visitors who may have made it past the front gate.  The nobles cannot be too
cautious in these trying times, and have taken every measure to insure their
own safety.  A gate to the West leads to the Courtyard, while a gate is
placed to East, leading into the Keep.

Captain Zand's Office~
&BThis room belongs to a higher standing officer.  Taking a quick look
around you see a very used and slightly cluttered desk, a small bookshelf,
and a chair.  The walls are filled with plaques of accomplishments.  One of
these is a plaque of solid gold.  It is bestowed upon a Fortress Champion, a
very high standing title for the few that earn it.

Hallway of the Keep~
&pAlong the walls torches light up the hallway, giving a soft glow to the
rooms.  Paintings of nobles decorate parts of the walls.  Occasionally you
see a servant hurry past, to keep it's masters bidding.  West you see the
gate leading out to the Bailey, and at the end of the long hallway to the
East, you can make out a huge door.  North and South small alcoves are built
in.

A Darkened Alcove~
The Alcove is very dark.  Without a light you wouldnt be able to see the
small couch or table with refreshments.  A person could sit here and watch
people in the hallway without being noticed.  Your light makes your shadow
dance on the wall, and it's eerily quiet in here.

The Cloak Room~
Racks used to hang visitors cloaks encompass the room.  Common looking
cloaks are hung on worn pine racks along the back of the room, while more
elegant ones hang on a lavishly decorated rack up front.  There is usually
one or more guards here watching for potential thieves.

Hallway of the Keep~
&pA plush red carpet flourishes the entire length of the hallway floor. 
There are two corridors here, one North where you hear people hustle around,
and one to the South where you hear soft murmurs of prayers.  To the East a

A Side Corridor~
&OLooking around you can see the corridor run North for a bit then takes
a sharp turn to the right.  The walls are basically empty, except from a
torch here and there.  There is no carpet decorating the floor or any
paintings on the wall.  Servants hustle around at all times, not even giving
you a second glance.

The Servants Corridor~
&OServants literally run around on the beck and call of the Lord and
Lady.  Not even noticing you, they manage to avoid pushing you over as they
make haste from one end to another.  Occasionally shouting out a new order
or request.  Taking a peek to the North and South, you see the servant's
rooms.

The servants hall~
You continue down the servant's hall.  Off to either side of you there
are small alcoves leading to what you suspect are the rooms that are

Servant's Room~
Stepping through one of the alcoves you exit the hall and enter a small,
plainly furnished room.  There are a number of cots set up against the walls
with a chest at the foot of each one.  A small torch burns fitfully on the
wall barely providing enough illumination to see by.  All in all this is a
boring place.

Servant's Room~
You exit the hall and enter through the archway into a well kept servant
room.  A mirror decorates one of the walls and a large pine closet is set in
a corner.  An oil lamp on a table, placed in the center of the room,
provides the only light here.  A wooden vase with flowers is set next to the
lamp, otherwise brightening the stale room.

Servants Hall~
&OOn the East wall you see an enormous painting of Lady Melita and Lord
Tyrus.  Torches mounted to either side illuminate it.  Looking South you see

Squire James' Room~
Looking around you can see a bed with an ornate chest located at it's
end.  Also a desk sits against the wall with a chair behind it.  The desk is
cluttered with stacks of parchment, a couple of feather quills, small vials
of ink and two oil lamps to provide enough light to work well into the
evening twilight.

Chapel~
Large candles on both sides of the West door fill the air with sweet
incense.  Pews line both sides of a narrow aisle, centered on a tabernacle
to the East.  A mural adorns the Northern wall, showing a holy man with a

his feet.

Chapel Altar~
Statues of holy men and women are recessed into the wall behind the
altar.  Dozens of candles are lit to provide enough light to see the
colorful tapestries on the North and Eastern wall.  South you can spot out a

Chapel~
In the Southeast corner is a confessional.  It's painted in dark colors,
and a red velvet cloth covers the openings.  An offering &Ytray&c is placed
upon a stone pedestal next to the booth.  A couple of rows of pews are set
here, and more are lined to the West.  To the North you see the candles
light up the altar.

Bottom of Spiral Staircase~
&wA spiral staircase, cut from granite blocks, leads upwards into
darkness.  The stone walls are filled with magical runes etched into the
hard granite by a powerful mage.  Torches are mounted on the wall, giving
the runes a magical aura as the flames flicker softly in a draft.

&wMore runes mark the walls around you, but these ones glow in the dim
light.  A cool draft from below whistles through the many cracks in the
wall.  The staircase seems to be endless in both directions.

number of scorch marks here and there to accompany them.  Not a sound is to

Top of Staircase~
&wA small window is formed into the circular wall, and as you look out
from this height, you find you have an excellent view of the entire
Fortress.  The glowing runes are so strong they create an imaginary
crescendo of warning.  Torches on either side of a door located on the South
wall light up the words, 'Disturb at your own peril!' The granite
staircase winds down into the darkness...

Babel's Chamber~
&RBooks and scrolls are thrown around haphazardly all over the place. 
The sound of boiling liquid percolating through glass tubes, and a smell of
sulfur powder permeate the air.  Shelves lined up with different vials,
urns, sacks and bottles dominate the West wall.  The workshop continues to
the South.  A soft glow is coming from the room to the East, you have a door
to the North.

&RThe shelves in this room are filled with all types of roots, leaves,
and extracts, ranging from the healing ginseng to the deadly mandrake.  Some
items show signs of use while many are covered in layers of dust and

Babel's Pentagon~
&RThe first thing to catch your attention is the giant glowing pentagram
inscribed on the floor.  A red candle burns at each point, and strange
glyphs are drawn on the walls.  Electric charges spark in the air and the
floor wavers in the center of the pentagram.  Some of the glyphs look
different from the others.  Broken staffs and wands are scattered on the
floor.

Babel's Hidden Stock-Pile~
&RThis room is very neat and very organized.  The walls are lined with a
number of shelves that contain books, scrolls and parchments.  They look as
if they've all been well taken care of.  A few other items are located on
the shelves and some may even be magical.  A variety of staves and wands are
carefully placed upon a table, some of them glowing with energy.

Hallway of the Keep~
&pYou see a number of pictures lining the wall, many depict major battles
that Lord Tyrus took part in.  Each has a date listed below it and they
proceed in chronological order.  The last dated picture is a strange one
though, it depicts this very Fortress straddling the pass.  Over the
Fortress a black sky reigns and lightning bolts burst forth to strike some
of the towers.  Among the black clouds some very vague shapes can be seen as
if the painter wanted the viewer to almost see a mind behind the storm. 
Under the painting the plaque showing the dates has the starting date, but
no finishing date.  The hall continues East and West.

carrying different weapons from a lance to a two-edged ax.  Huge urns are

Before the Double Doors~
&pThe huge double doors to the East span the entire width of the hallway
and rise up to the ceiling.  A heavy wrought iron pull is attached to each
of the massive doors.  The red velvet carpet stops just short from the sweep

The Ballroom~
&CYou are in a very large ballroom.  Many chains extend from the ceiling,
each having a lavish candelabra attached to the end.  Far across the
ballroom to the East you can see Lord Tyrus's throne.  Several colorful,
velvet davenport's located along the North wall provide weary dancers a good
place to rest while being able to view the others.

&OYou smell the aroma of fresh baked bread.  It is very warm in here next

refreshments and food to the guests.

Trophy Room~
&CA number of banners decorate this wall here.  Under each banner is a
small plaque describing from which clan/enemy the banner was taken, along
with when and where the battle occurred.  Several display cases show off

and a mage coming to aid him.  The mage is giving Lord Tyrus a glowing glow,
which he combines with his sword.  The united items glows with power, and
flames shoot out from it.  On the last picture you see Lord Tyrus separate
the weapons, giving the mage the glowing glove.

Banquet Hall~
&OA fine mahogany banquet table is stretched across the room.  Many red
velvet covered chairs are lined up along the table.  Extravagant pewter
dinner service is set out before every seat.  Silver candle holders are

swan decorated with flowers.

The Ballroom~
&CMany chains extend from the ceiling, each having a lavish candelabra

into the banquet hall.  South you make out display cases and portraits.

Room of Heritage~
&CA pedestal is placed in the center of the room.  It is illuminated by a
small glowing light the hovers in mid-air and resist all attempts to budge. 
On the pedestal an unrolled parchment rests under glass.  Taking a look at
the parchment you can see it's the original deed to the land upon which this
fortress is situated on.  Portraits of ancestral family members hang on the
walls, each with it's own plaque with length of reign.

Lord Tyrus' Throne~
&YYou are on some velvet covered steps.  A great throne is set on top
of the stairs, with a smaller looking throne next to it.  Heavy velvet
drapes arch the wall behind the thrones.  Large golden candle holders are
placed to the sides of the thrones.  Two flag staffs hold the Fortress coat
of arms and family crest angle outwards from the walls.

South of Bethaven~
&GYou are placed in a wooded area, just past the South gate of Bethaven. 
All around you trees thrust up into the air reaching for the sun.  You can
hear the sounds of many of the local wildlife rooting around in the trees
looking for lunch or maybe looking for each other to make the other lunch. 
The path continues to the South and curves to your East.

&GYou work your way down a path, looking around you can see the forest
thickening.  Taking a closer look at the path you can see many footprints

can still make out the gate leading to the city, while to the South you can

An Arch of Trees~
&GTo the South, you can see some sort of elegant castle, which looks to
shine with a magnificent brilliance of it's own against the dreary backdrop
of the forest.  You may enter the castle to the South, or travel the road to
the North.  To the East lies a small inlet to a narrow forest path leading
off into the distance.

A Path along the City Walls~
&GThis well-travelled path leads Eastward, winding between the southern
