Discworld creator help
slur_convention

.SH Summary
.SP 5 5
This help file will discuss appropriate ways to make custom SLUR
directives. Obviously, these are just recommendations, but for the love
of Offler, follow them so the next creator who has to put up with your
work doesn't go bald.
.EP
.SH Naming conventions
.SP 5 5
The first convention that will probably save you a lot of headaches has to
do with capitalization. When at all possible, name your directives in ALL
CAPS. In this implementation, the only indication that something might be
the name of a directive is that it is a string that is the first item in a
list. If that string does not match exactly a registered directive, the
interpretor will assume it is just another constant and do the appropriate
thing for a list of items without a directive. By naming your directives
in ALL CAPS, it will be obvious, at a glance, which lists start with a
directive and which don't.

Next we deal with how to name them in the first place. I recommend that
you come up with a prefix for your new package of directives and put that
in front off all the names, IE CRAFT_WIBBLE, or otherwise be VERY sure
that no-one has or will use that name somewhere else. Once registered, a
function has exclusive use of the directive name used to call it. If the
object attempts to register two functions with the same name, number two
is out of luck.
.EP

.SH Function form
.SP 5 5
This is one of the recommendations that is a hair's width from being
required. All functions to be called by the interpretor must have the
following form:

mixed FUNCTIONNAME (mixed args, string* scope)
{
  ...
}

Why mixed return type? Because error messages are passed back through
return values, and they're strings. For consistancy's sake, since there
are functions that return just about anything, we stick with mixed.

Why a mixed argument "args"? For one thing, you never know what some
half-wit will put into his script. If the functions had a set number of
arguments, or even a varargs, there would be far more runtime errors we
culdn't handle in our code. Thus, the idea of input and output is to be
extremely liberal, and then do your error checking in a way the
interpretor can handle without resorting to runtimes.

Why a array of strings called "scope"? This is the way the interpretor
keeps track of who knows what. There is a Global space for variables, but
by and large each iteration of a script should have its own variable
space. Otherwise, two simultaneously running scripts will barf all over
each other. Just pass it without comment and don't fiddle with it. You
will notice that the interpretor function (which is not a directive, but
has a form similar to the one above) is varargs and can be used without
specifying a scope. This is just fine; and time the interpretor is given
an empty scope, it makes one on its own and presses on.
.EP

.SH Error checking and abort messages
.SP 5 5
Since we are so liberal with what we give and take in a directive, we must
do the work of error checking ourselves.

First of all, we must check to see if we have the right number of
arguments. If you made a functions that works ad infinitum, you must
check to see if you have enough arguments, or any at all. Use a sizeof
for this. If there is a problem, return an abort message immediately.

Secondly, You must check for types of the arguments. All the arguments
you were passed, however, are SLUR items and you must interpret them
before you can determine their type or value. I have found this to be an
excellent method for doing this:

  if (abortp(holder = interpret(arg[1],scope))) return holder;

In this way, you get ahold of the value of the argument, check it for
abort messages, return them if necessary, then you proceed to do your own
type checking:

  if (!(intp(holder))) return "__FUNCTION_bad_type_for_foo__";

And on top of that, you might need to do some value checking on the return
value:

  if (holder > 2 || holder < 0) return "__FUNCTION_bad_value_for_foo__";

Do all these things first, before you waste too many CPU cycles munging
though other work. Remember, we're doing our own type and error checking
at each directive call, so we should do our best to minimize the amount of
CPU we use per call.

You will notice that the example error messages start and end with double
underscores. Was there a really good technical reason for doing this?
Yes and no. I needed some universal signal that says "Hey, something
weird just happened, so I'm going to scream about it in an unusual way."
Is double underscores a good way to do this? Maybe not, but I've decided
that's how it's going to be done. Besides, that function above I used in
the interpretation step, "abortp", is integral to the interpretor and keys
off on beginning and ending double underscores to indicate an abort is
necessary. No thinking is needed on your part if you use it.

Now that I have discussed why we're using double underscores to signal
aborts, what about the stuff in the middle? Well, obviously you'll need
to tell whoever is debugging this thing in what function the problem
happened, so always use the name of the directive in the abort message.
Secondly, try to be specific with the rest of the message. Try to tell
them which argument went wrong and what was wrong with it. If you don't
want to be constantly saying "arg[5] has a wrong type", when you write
your documentation, give arg[5] a notional name, like "skill_bonus". it
is obvious then that "skill_bonus" is an integer.

I will reiterate the routine for error checking: interpret, type check,
value check. Always always always always interpret first, even if you're
100% sure that what should go in that spot is a integer, or a string,
because I'm 150% sure that something funny will end up in that spot some
day and your object will blow up. There is another good reason why you
interpret first: that's how the entire interpretor scheme is supposed to
work! The entire thing is a recursively called branching tree of
directives that eventually work their way down to constants at the ends of
the tree branches. In order for that to work, every call to a directive
must involve the function interpreting its arguments FIRST.
.EP

.SH SLUR Mantras
.SP 5 5
Following conventions, you may chant this to yourself while you write your
custom directives:

Interpret, Type Check, Value Check, MUNGE-MUNGE-MUNGE, Return
