In the distance you hear mixed screams of agony and cackles of delight. A dim light of a bonfire can be seen dancing between the tree limbs to the south. The path you are travelling upon stretches north toward a dark structure, and south toward the bonfire. Secured to the stake is a bishop screaming and writhing in pain. Black smoke billows from the fire and reeks of sulfur and burning flesh. Within the fire itself are the half-charred bodies of little altar boys being burnt to death. The forest ground surrounding the bonfire is trampled down where various creatures have danced around the fire. The splashing of water can be heard to the east. ~ 0 0 3 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 200 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 202 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 203 S #202 Baptismal~ A large pool of water bubbles up from the center of the clearing you are in. Surrounding the pool are several copper vases that contain a foul black liquid that you realize was gathered from the pond itself. An odor of sulfur and stench lingers in the air. Several brooms lean against a malformed oak tree along the edge of the clearing. Inside the pool, a man adorned in a black satin robe dunks witches, baptising them with the putrid muck. As each witch is baptised, they snatch a broom from the oak tree and soar into the sky. ~ 0 0 3 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 201 S #203 Wicked Carnival~ You have stumbled upon a carnival in the woods, but this is no ordinary carnival. Each booth has some demonic purpose. The first one you see has little children throwing balls at a box, trying to release a demon. Another has six nuns standing upon each other in a pyramid shape while contestants throw huge balls at them, attempting to knock them into a huge vat of boiling mud. ~ 0 0 3 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 201 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 204 S #204 The Summoning~ A large dias rises from the ground. Upon it is carved an inverted pentagram with small piles of sulfur placed at each of its corners. An altar rising from the center of the pentagram is stained red, and several entrails and body parts surround it. ~ 0 0 3 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 203 S #205 End of the Forest Path~ A chilled wind gusts across your path, swirling around you with icy fingers. Dead leaves deposited by the surrounding trees billow up and dance along the gust. Deep throated growls seem to be aimed at you from the tangled forest, and you become acutely aware of the lack of any other signs of life. A delapidated structure rises up from the end of the path. Its turrets are intact, but the outer walls are peeling with weathered grey paint. ~ 0 0 3 D0 ~ door~ 1 0 206 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 200 S #206 The Parlor~ The floor is made from long planks of pine that appear to still carry a sheen beneath the thick coating of dust. An ornate chandelier made of crystal prisms dangles precariously from the ceiling, and you can hear a soft tinkling sound as a draft brushes the prisms together. A harpsichord rests in the center of the large room upon a round rug detailed with fine needlework. Several pieces of tasteful furniture are scattered about the room, though it appears they have not been rested upon for several years. A soft glow illuminates the open doorway to the east, and a staircase rises up from the northwest corner of the room. What light dares shatter the darkness comes from glowing braziers lining the walls. Hanging along the top of the walls are figures pinned with thorned hooks and other implements of terror. Some moan at you, barely alive, writhing in place, held fast to the wall which dribbles their blood in long rivulets to puddle onto the floor. Tables are set periodically across the room, each covered with a thin crimson layer of leather and holding an array of wickedly sharp instruments, all caked with innocent blood. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 208 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 206 S #208 The Infirmary~ Long bloodied white tables line the crimson splattered walls in this small and vile smelling room. Some of the tables are occupied with writhing bodies wracked with immense pain from hooks and needles embedded within their frames. Moans of agony and pain have made the air thick and barely breathable. Puddles of bodily fluids dot the floor; traversing the length of the room may prove difficult. ~ 0 8 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 207 S #209 Lavatory~ The moment you enter the room, a soft red glow appears, giving the walls and fixtures a bloody hue. A bathtub is built into the western wall and is shallowly filled with lukewarm water. You hear a rhythmic metallic pound, as if someone or something is methodically pounding against the water pipes feeding this lavatory. ~ 0 8 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 206 S #210 Stairway~ A wispy blanket of blue-gray mist creeps its way along the stairs, lending a soft dim glow to the stairwell. Each step you take causes the stairs to groan with resistance. The walls along the stairwell hold a number of portraits, each one depicting scenes of torture and bloodletting under the guise of night. ~ 0 8 0 D4 ~ ~ 0 0 211 D5 ~ ~ 0 0 206 S #211 Landing~ You have come to the head of the stairwell leading to the first level of the structure. A wide hallway lined with a crimson runner stretches to the north. Large torches mounted along the hall flicker in and out, extinguished and relit by an unseen source. The floorboards and walls creak loudly as the wind outside beats against the house. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 212 D5 ~ ~ 0 0 210 S #212 Hallway~ The hallway ends here at two heavy wooden doors, while a grime-covered window to the north lets in very little light. The window rattles as though someone or something were trying to get in. The air here feels cold and almost alive, and countless voices whisper tales of fear and hatred in your ear. Although you cannot make out the source of these voices, you sense the presence of shadowy beings flitting just beyond your line of sight. A section of the ceiling is outlined as if it could be opened. ~ 0 8 0 E window~ Peering out the window, you find yourself staring straight into the grinning face of a black-furred, manlike abomination. Hanging onto the ledge with the long, filthy claws of one hand while attempting to break the window with the other, it does not look as though it intends to spend the night outside. Cruelly intelligent red eyes glare back at you with the promise of a slow, painful death once the creature breaks through the window. ~ D1 ~ door~ 1 0 213 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 211 D3 ~ door~ 1 0 214 D4 ~ ceiling~ 1 0 219 S #213 Bedroom~ This appears to have once been the bedroom of a young child. Cracked, peeling paint, formerly a sunny yellow hue but now faded to a sickly pale green, flakes away from the walls in large chips. Mutilated dolls and dismembered teddy bears lie along the dusty rows of toy shelves lining one wall. In the center of the room stands a rickety old bed, crawling with roaches and topped with the tattered, moldy remnants of a pink canopy. A strong odor of decaying flesh seems to originate in the closet along the north wall. ~ 0 8 0 E canopy bed~ Pink, mildewed sheets are tangled up in a pile at the foot of this bed, while huge black roaches crawl in and out of holes that have been chewed into the mattress. Moth-riddled shreds of fabric hang limply from the tops of four wooden posts, all that remains of the bed's canopy cover. You notice a series of five long gashes extending from the top of the mattress and running down along its side, ending in rips in the frilly skirt of the bed. Trailing alongside these gashes is a rust-red stain. ~ D0 ~ closet~ 1 0 215 D3 ~ door~ 1 0 212 S #214 Master Bedroom~ An open window on the west wall allows a constant breeze to flow through the room, ruffling the satin coverlet that has been spread across an immense four poster bed. The shutters of the window rattle loudly. A rocking chair next to the window is rocking rhythmically back and forth, whether from the energy of the breeze or not is uncertain. You notice a large indentation along the satin coverlet as if it is supporting a heavy form, though it is difficult to discern any strangers in the room with you. ~ 0 8 0 D1 ~ door~ 1 0 212 S #215 Closet~ Your eyes water and your throat constricts as you are confronted with the overpowering stench of rotten flesh. The faint glow given off by some sort of phosphorescent fungus growing on the walls provides just enough light for you to make out the source of the odor. ~ 0 8 0 D2 ~ closet~ 1 0 213 M 50 H 50 S #216 Death~ Silence dominates the room. It is completely black, and the air seems heavy and suffocating. The room is amorphous, lacking any form, and distance is unjudgeable. ~ 0 9 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 217 D4 ~ floorboard~ 1 0 206 S #217 Fear~ Visual noise flashes bright and fast like a strobe. Images fly through: water, falling, spiders, blood, and tight places present themselves in quick succession, and the images continue their mad race onward. ~ 0 8 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 216 D5 ~ ~ 0 0 218 S #218 Insanity~ Four walls of steep concrete lead upwards toward light and warmth, or so it appears. The air is freezing and thin here at the base, and the ground underfoot is soft and spongy. A low mumbling or humming is audible. ~ 0 8 0 D4 ~ ~ 0 0 217 S #219 Attic~ After making your way through the crawl space, you find yourself covered in a thick layer of age old dust and silken webs. In all directions you see piles of discarded belongings that no longer have owners to claim them. Crumbling boxes with bits of clothing bursting from their seams, an old baby carriage holding tattered baby blankets, faded toys jumbled amongst the boxes, and sturdy chests holding treasures from long ago are all nestled within this attic space. ~ 0 9 0 D5 ~ ceiling~ 1 0 212 M 150 H 150 S #220 Grey Structure~ A pebbled path ends at a set of doors that await your opening. You find yourself before a wide structure colored a dingy grey and hosting no obvious windows. A carving of a winking gargoyle is propped above the doors, melding well with the structure of the premises. A hoot owl is perched upon the roof, its head spinning around slowly, taking in its surroundings. ~ 0 0 3 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 200 D3 ~ doors~ 1 0 221 S #221 Mortuary~ The stank scent of cold death permeates this darkened room. Long wooden tubs filled with thick embalming fluids line the walls to the east and west, the liquids bubbling and churning within. As you near one of the tanks, you can make out what appears to be a hand straining to rise up from the bottom. It clutches feebly at the air, jerks, and slowly sinks back down. From within another of the tubs you can make out the sound of draining waters. ~ 0 8 0 D1 ~ doors~ 1 0 220 S #222 The Embalming Tub~ The wet wooden walls are slick with oozing fluids, giving off a clinical odor. The bottom of the tub is dominated by a large, slotted drain which has but recently clinked shut. Just before the dank liquid embraces your feet, you notice small holes lining the bottom of the walls, belching out more death-preserving fluids. ~ 0 8 0 D4 ~ ~ 0 0 221 S #223 Kitchen~ Metal shelves and counters adorn the expansive kitchen. Several pots and pans and cutlery devises are hovering above you on deteriorating racks. A foul odor lingers in the air, and strung along the floor are the rotten corpses of those who have been foolish enough to enter this room. A steady buzzing tickles your ears. Circling all of the corpses is a swarm of flies while little maggots crawl in and out of the deceased. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ door~ 1 0 224 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 206 S #224 Beyond the Mansion~ Thick brambles and sprawling branches form a natural tunnel through this section of the woods. The mansion rises behind you, a sentinel of darkness. A slightly cleared path extends from beneath your feet northward. Glittering eyes blink at you from beyond the brambles, and you can almost detect the feel of hot breath against your skin. ~ 0 1 3 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 225 D2 ~ door~ 1 0 223 S #225 Cave Entrance~ The brambled canopy continues overhead and ends at a stony formation. A darkened cave opening yawns before you to the north. Large bones and teeth are set into the perimeter of the cave opening, forming what appears to be a large mouth. A cold wind blows out of the cave, and a faint odor of decomposing flesh lingers in the air. ~ 0 5 3 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 226 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 224 S #226 Cavernous Room~ The cave opens up to a large room in the cavern with exits leading east, west, and south. An assortment of bones are scattered around the room, some still retaining bits of rotten flesh. A steady wind blows from the east, and a gnawing sound comes from the west. ~ 0 9 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 227 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 225 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 229 S #227 Bone Door~ The cavern ceiling slopes down sharply to the east. Connected to the ceiling and the floor is a large door constructed from the femurs of a variety of creatures. The darkened cavern is chilled and you can hear rustles of movement from within the walls. ~ 0 9 0 D1 ~ bones~ 1 0 228 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 226 S #228 Cavernous Pit~ The mass pile of bones rolling beneath your feet gives way and you plummet into a large pit. The walls are smooth and contain no footholds nor hand grips to facilitate escape. You discover you have companions within this darkened pit, though their lives were snuffed out eons ago. ~ 0 13 0 S #229 Wall of Bones~ Aged bones and grinning skulls have been stacked and entwined together to form a giant wall. Bits of tattered flesh is strewn along the cavern floor, mixed with splatterings of dried blood.
