A pack of large rats is gnawing at the skeleton. Strange. Surely, after all these years, even the marrow has rotted away from those old bones. ~ 0 9 0 D3 ~ ~ 1 0 1803 S #1806 Landing~ The staircase stops here for a moment and opens onto a landing before continuing up and down. A few of the crystal globes which have lit the darkness are cracked and have gone out. South of you is a strange hole in the wall, seemingly melted out of the rock into a doorway. To the west, the wall has been broken down to reveal a small chamber. High on that same wall, a rectangular slit has been cut into the stone. ~ 0 8 0 E slit~ About twenty feet off the floor, it is perhaps three feet across. A large, misshapen skeleton seems to have been melted into that seat. High on the east wall is a slit cut into the rock. Scattered around the floor is some rubble from the collapsed wall, and a few spears with odd fletchings. You notice that there is no sign of any door. If that wall hadn't collapsed, how would anyone get in or out of here? ~ 0 9 0 E spears~ Upon closer inspection, these 'spears' in fact seem to be huge crossbow bolts. ~ E slit~ It is cut through the wall to the landing on the other side of the wall, and reminds you of something you have seen in certain castles, murder slits they were called, places to safely fire arrows at invaders. ~ E skeleton~ Looking closer, the skeleton doesn't seem to have melted into the chair as much as grown out of it. Its skull resembles a dragon's, while its body is more reminiscent of a large ogre. Out the wrist of its right arm sprouts a boney protuberance, almost like a large crossbow grown from bone and sinew. ~ D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1806 S #1808 Eaten Away~ The walls of this chamber are irregularly shaped, like a cave washed out by water for thousands of years. The floor, however, is perfectly flat, half of its area taken up by an enormous pentagram, surrounded by strange writing and oddly warped circles. Beyond the pentagram on the far side of the chamber is a large gate built directly into the floor, covered with a host of magical sigils. The crystal globes in this area glow with a blood red light, and seem to pulsate slowly with a life of their own. ~ 0 12 0 E sigils~ They seem oddly related to the language of magic, but more archaic and strangely frightening. Another one, just below your feet, grins mirthlessly, and then returns to normal. ~ D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1813 S #1816 Shattered Altar~ A huge altarstone dominates the center of the room, the only thing that has been spared destruction here. A towering set of statues at the southern end of the room have been toppled and defaced, carvings on pillars have been hacked with blades, and a river has eroded its way through the northern wall, the foul water spilling over the floor and disappearing through large cracks at the opposite side of the chamber. Looking again, you see the terror and despair in their eyes, the only thing about them which moves. ~ D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1819 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1821 S #1821 Last Stand~ Bones fill this rough cavern which has been brutally torn from the rock. The lives of hundreds must have ended here in horrific fashion. Most of the massive skeletons are incomplete, as if ripped limb from limb, and some are simply shattered. The far western wall has been melted and many bones are stuck inside the now-frozen rock. A powerful odour of fungus permeates the air. ~ 0 9 0 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1820 S #1822 Portal Room~ The floor of this room is completely awash with foul-smelling water which floods in from a hole in the eastern wall. To the north, three huge hoops of stone stand free on pedestals, flickers of old magic spitting off them. Images flash inside the portals irregularly, scenes of distant lands and ruined cities. A rickety staircase of wood seems to have been constructed within the last few hundred years, leading up to a small hole in the wall. ~ 0 8 0 E portals~ You catch glimpses of a circle of stones somewhere to the northeast of Midgaard, the lands outside Old Thalos, a mountaintop, and a vast, empty city somewhere beneath the ocean. The flickering images only last fractions of a second at a time, otherwise you can see straight through the stone hoops to the wall behind. ~ D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1825 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1829 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1816 D4 A crumbling wood staircase ends at a hole high in the wall A crumbling wood staircase ends at a hole high in the wall. ~ ~ 0 0 1823 S #1823 A Narrow Passage~ You stand in a plain rectangular passageway, which leads to a door in the north, while a wooden stairway leads down. The air is filled with a soft, regular thumping like a heartbeat. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ door~ 1 0 1824 D5 ~ ~ 0 0 1822 S #1824 Catwalk~ You stand on a catwalk overlooking a large metal pool, filled to overflowing with a caustic green sludge which bubbles madly, the vapours from which painfully burn your eyes. ~ 0 8200 0 D2 ~ door~ 1 0 1823 S #1825 Blasted Remains~ Craters pit the floor, and smashed pillars lay on their sides where they were toppled in this blasted room. The cracked bottoms of the deeper craters spew forth a sulphurous vapour into the air. Passageways lead to the west and south, while a smooth hole has been carved in the northern wall. ~ 0 9 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1832 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1822 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1826 S #1826 An Empty Passageway~ A dusty passageway winds its way into the darkness before you. Small drippings of moisture and glowing fungal growths provide the only relief on the bare walls. ~ 0 9 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1827 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1825 S #1827 An Echoing Hallway~ Every noise you make in this hollow passageway echoes back to you, and it seems as though the very rocks are watching you silently. The hallway at this point stretches south and curls around to the west. ~ 0 0 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1826 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1828 S #1828 The Archives~ Thousands upon thousands of gigantic shelves fill this colossal room from floor to ceiling, filled with hundreds of thousands of books. The volumes are bound in a bluish metal, and stamped with the strange runes common to this place. A complex locking mechanism seems to keep the books in place, one which works very well, for you can see only one or two scattered volumes which have fallen over the millenia. ~ 0 8200 0 E shelves~ The shelves disappear into the dark depths of the library, near-limitless in their extent. What knowledge must be sealed up in these volumes! ~ D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1827 S #1829 Underwater!~ An underground river has carved for itself a tube to flow through the rock here. The current pulls you strongly to the west, but you could still swim to the east with some effort. ~ 0 9 6 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1830 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1822 S #1830 A Tight Squeeze~ The underground river narrows here and the current increases greatly. Large slimy objects ooze around your body in the raging torrent, and the water exudes a foul reek. From here the river flows north and west. ~ 0 9 6 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1831 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1829 S #1831 A Turn in the River~ The sludgy water extends up to the ceiling here, where the river bends sharply, extending to the west and south. Small pieces of bone and meat drift past your vision, drawn by the current to some unknown destination downstream. ~ 0 0 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1830 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1832 S #1832 A Dark Pool~ Stalagtites pierce the darkness above your head, their faint reflections glimmering in the dark pool of scummy water below. A strange scent, foul like milk left in the sun for a week, and yet strangely beguiling, fills the air. A hole in the wall is to the south, while the river flows through openings in the north and east walls. ~ 0 9 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1833 D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1831 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1825 S #1833 Pale Boulders~ A wide, low cave stretches out before you. Small stalagtites hang from the ceiling, and the floor is littered with hundreds of wide boulders, dusted with pale-coloured fungus. The stream flowing in from the north widens to fill the room with a few feet of sticky water. ~ 0 9 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1834 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1832 S #1834 Swampy Growths~ The water here flows very slowly, and a strange pool of life has sprung up. Thick carpets of algae, pale white reeds, and some breed of floating mushroom dominate the cave, while a few examples of stumpy trees lay scattered around the perimiter. A soft, regular thumping sound fills the otherwise silent cave. ~ 0 9 0 E trees~ No more than 10 feet high, the tree seems made up more of roots than anything else, while its bark is spongy and slimy. So that's what happens to a tree left underground for so long. ~ D1 ~ ~ 0 0 1835 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1833 S #1835 Waterfall~ A 30-foot waterfall tumbles down into a deep pool, and might have been beautiful were it not for the grey, slimy water, and the chunks of stinking meat floating in the pool. A carved set of steps lead up the side of the waterfall, from where you can hear a wet thump, rhythmically pounding in your ears. ~ 0 8 0 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1834 D4 ~ ~ 0 0 1836 S #1836 Heart of the River~ A large cave spreads out into the darkness here. Cracks in the walls and ceiling leak a strong current of spring water into the pool your feet stand in. A foul waterfall cascades down just behind you, spraying a fine mist in the air and coating you with a slippery ooze. And hanging high in the air is.. A hole. A hole has been torn in the fabric of space, lending you a glimpse into some dark and chaotic realm. A rumble which you feel more than hear emanates from within. ~ 0 8 0 E hole~ A ragged tear in the fabric of reality, it appears to be a gate from some other place. You can see blurred images, flashes of what might be tentacles or faces, but your eyes can perceive nothing clearly within. A magical sigil or ward of some sort traces faintly over the hole, blocking any passage in or out. ~ D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1840 D5 ~ ~ 0 0 1835 S #1837 A Tiny Passageway~ You can barely squeeze your body into this small passageway. The floor is covered with many small footprints, going back and forth. To the east lies a small, partially hidden door. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1838 D1 ~ trapdoor~ 1 1820 1802 S #1838 Pygmy Haven~ A wide, low-ceilinged cave has been crudely cut out of the rock. The walls and floor are covered with paintings of great skill however, depicting tiny people killing beasts and people many times their own size, and eating them. In the far recesses of the cave are a few bones scattered about. ~ 0 8 0 E paintings~ The paintings are stories, depicting the tiny people attacking large white bears, elves wandering the forest, small groups of minotaurs, and many other creatures. All the stories end with the pygmies roasting and eating their victims. ~ D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1837 S #1839 A Crack in the Mountainside~ The stone of the mountain has cracked here, leaving a natural passageway to the other side. To the east you hear the sound of running water, while an odour of fungus wafts in on the breeze from the west. ~ 0 4 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 20079 D3 ~ ~ 0 0 1800 S #1840 A dripping tunnel~ The tunnel walls are coated with a purplish fungus which drip with moisture. The sound of the falling drops of water echoes in your ears. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1841 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1836 S #1841 A drippy tunnel~ Drops of water fall regularly from the ceiling, and in places, stalagtites have begun to grow. On the floor, a foul-smelling pile of dead skin rots slowly. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1842 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1840 S #1842 A really drippy tunnel~ A few cracks in the ceiling of the tunnel allow water to fall heavily to the floor, making it seem as though it were raining here, far underground. The floor is slick with a reeking white pus which does not wash away with the water. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1843 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1841 S #1843 A blue cavern~ The air is moist and cool in this large cavern. The walls stretch high into the air, and all around, a dull blue glow emanates from the rocks. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1844 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1842 S #1844 Heartfelt longings~ The cavern is filled with a ruddy glow from no apparent source. The walls are covered with long, clinging vines which, so slowly as almost to be unnoticeable, begin to reach out for you. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1845 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1843 S #1845 Flickering lights~ The rocky walls of this small, dry cave are covered with large, glassy windows, from which magically spring flashing and flickering images of far-away people and places. The effect is quite disconcerting, and you feel your intellect begin to slowly drain away. ~ 0 8 0 D0 ~ ~ 0 0 1846 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1844 S #1846 A dark room~ The end of the tunnel is brought forth suddenly by a dark wall. This room, covered in moss and vines is small in size, though echos boom forth, emminating from any sound even vaguelly audible. Near the north wall of this room there is a drop into a pit of total darkness, sounds of soft chewing echo around the tunnel. ~ 0 8 0 D2 ~ ~ 0 0 1845 D5 ~ ~ 0 0 1847 S #1847 The End~ After he drop down from the room above, this dark pit stretches out for quite a distance around. Many bones and torn clothing lie around the floor, scattered in a most careless fashion. A few rocks clatter down the sides of this pit and onto its rugged floor. ~ 0 8 0 D4 ~ ~ 0 0 1846 S #0 #SPECIALS M 1803 spec_cast_mage M 1804 spec_breath_acid M 1805 spec_breath_frost M 1807 spec_breath_any M 1809 spec_cast_adept M 1810 spec_cast_mage M 1811 spec_cast_cleric M 1812 spec_breath_fire M 1813 spec_cast_undead M 1816 spec_cast_mage M 1818 spec_breath_any M 1819 spec_cast_mage M 1820 spec_poison M 1821 spec_cast_undead S #RESETS D 0 1802 3 2 D 0 1803 1 1 D 0 1805 3 1 D 0 1808 5 2 D 0 1809 4 2 D 0 1823 0 1 D 0 1824 2 1 D 0 1837 1 2 M 0 1802 1 1804 1 M 0 1801 1 1805 1 M 0 1805 4 1811 1 M 0 1809 3 1812 1 M 0 1809 3 1814 1 M 0 1805 4 1815 1 M 0 1810 1 1815 1 M 0 1811 1 1817 1 M 0 1806 1 1819 1 M 0 1807 1 1821 1 M 0 1804 1 1824 1 M 0 1805 4 1825 1 M 0 1809 3 1825 1 M 0 1812 2 1826 1 M 0 1805 4 1827 1 M 0 1803 1 1828 1 M 0 1808 2 1830 1 M 0 1808 2 1832 1 M 0 1812 2 1833 1 M 0 1813 1 1834 1 M 0 1800 1 1836 1 M 0 1814 3 1838 3 M 0 1814 3 1838 3 M 0 1814 3 1838 3 M 0 1815 1 1840 1 M 0 1821 1 1842 1 M 0 1816 1 1843 1 M 0 1819 1 1844 1 M 0 1820 1 1845 1 M 0 1818 1 1847 1 S #SHOPS 0 #$
