rises above you, a guardian to the less fortunate of the realm.  A set of
granite stairs appear to have crushed quartz scattered within as they
sparkle gaily, ushering you through a massive doorway.

following your every step.  The ceiling appears to rise about twenty feet

it.  A copper bell dangles from a sturdy stick protruding from the desk, and
a sign-in register awaits your signature.  Windowed double doors block exits
to the east and west.

Human orderlies, adorned in white shirts and pants, are busy gathering up
cleaning supplies and linens.  A harsh-looking dwarven woman examines a
multi-tiered cart with several wooden trays that emit a smell reminiscent of
raw fish mixed with wet dirt.  Two small steps lead up to a swinging door
and the double doors to the south lead out of the Rose Ward.

The swinging door leading down appears to only swing in one
direction---into the ward.  The plaster walls are painted in soft rose
colors, and a running mural of a vine of roses extends along each wall to

Something appears to be different with this mirror.  After a few moments,
you realize the sights reflected in the mirror are not backwards.  The hall
continues to the south, and a large windowed double door is to the west.

Rose Recreation Room~
The music that has been teasing you is now almost unbearably loud. 
Unfortunately, the volume has distorted to such an extent, you still can't
quite make out the melody line.  The ceiling is embedded with glass panels,
allowing you to see the sky.  The room, keeping in step with the rest of the
ward, is painted a rose color.  Rose chairs and tables are scattered about. 
The tables are topped with various games meant to soothe the soul.  Double
doors lead east and west.

The rose-colored walls are painted with a continuous vine of roses that
extend to the south.  A light music, almost nauseatingly sweet, flows into

appears the wall has been clawed at with long sharp strokes.  A windowed

A faint music that seems to consist of calliope tones tickles your ears. 
The expertly plastered walls are smooth to the touch, and the mica floors
reflect the bright lights emitting from the oil lamps.  A large double door
leads east while the corridor extends west.

Corridor~
You notice a burgundy settee resting alongside the double doors to the
north as you reach the end of the corridor.  The light music flowing through
the building follows you like a lonesome pup.  The inside of this sanitorium
is more sterile than any structure you have encountered in Alanthia.  You
receive a powerful vision of your innards being scrubbed so as not to
contaminate anything you come in contact with.  A flight of stairs lead up
from the southwest corner of the room.

Tangerine Ward Reception Desk~
A circular pine desk has been painted a bright tangerine and has been
placed in the middle of the room.  The orderlies assigned to this ward have
decided to extend themselves a break.  A rather extended break it seems. 
Soiled linens are piled along the edges of the reception room as are trays
of half-eaten substances.  A small step-ladder leads up to a door.

Tangerine Ward~
Geometric figures are so well painted they seem to jump at you from the
tangerine colored walls.  Your step is comfortably cushioned and muffled as
you walk.  Looking down, you realize the entire floor is made of a rubbery

Woodworking~
Long wooden tables fill the room and are covered with sawdust and tools. 
Small wooden mallets and carving picks as sharp as butter knives adorn the
tables.  A wooden cabinet stretching almost to the ceiling of the room fills
your sight to the north.  The doors are made of a solid glass, and through
the glass you see terribly sharp saws and other cutting devices.  The
cabinet is padlocked.

Tangerine Ward~
The large geometric shapes continue their travels along the tangerine
walls.  A small warning plaque is perched high upon the wall.  It warns not
to stare too long at the shapes for fear they will become permanently burned

Leatherworking~
A soft pleasing smell of leather fills the room.  Long wooden tables line
the room.  There seems to be a lack of tools to work the materials, but
finished products rest atop the tables.  Many appear to be leather straps
and bindings, others are pouches and moneybelts.  The skill of the work is
most impressive.

Tangerine Ward~
A four foot tall rectangular shaped window has been carved into the
northern tangerine wall.  A cloth tapestry with hundreds of clusters of blue
dots ranging in size is tacked up near the window.  A metal cylinder rests
on a tripod and faces the window.  At each end of the cylinder, glass lenses
have been attached.  A tangerine stool rests in front of the smaller end of
the cylinder.  A square door leads west.

Production Room~
A makeshift wooden platform spreads across the southern quarter of the
room.  The lamps in this room have been extinguished until the next
performance by the talented in-patients.  Metal rings extend from the walls,
a convenient tie-down for the more belligerent of audience members.  An
occasional husky giggle reaches your ears, seemingly coming from beneath the
platform.

Tangerine Ward~
A single rose lies on the ground with a gentle frost kissing the tips of
its velvet petals.  It has somehow remained in full-bloom without benefit of
water or soil.  Small droplets of moisture weep from the stem, quickly
evaporating upon the floor.  A wave of helplessness washes over you, though
the emotion is not your own.  A square door lies to the east, and the
tangerine walls stretch south.

You nearly tumble head over heels as you slip on a rotten banana peel. 
In fact, the entire floor is filled with discarded remains of fruit.  The

with tiny black eggs that seem to wiggle slightly.  A trapezoid door is to
the west.

A blast of moist heat embraces you as you pass through the door. 
Fledgling sprouts push their way through beds of dark soil, the joy of new
life inspiring their growth.  The ceiling is constructed from large panels
of glass which are covered with droplets of water that gently drip on you. 
You notice your armor is beginning to attract condensation.

Tangerine Ward~
The soft, repetitive music pushes its way back into your auditory canal. 
It becomes difficult to concentrate, and the walls seem to pulse around you.
Your throat constricts as if held in a vise-grip of a titan.  Your mouth is
unbearably dry, and your skin breaks out in a cold sweat.  The room begins
to slowly spin within your sights, making it difficult to keep your
equilibrium.  A pentagon shaped door is to the east.

Time-Out~
An unfurnished room with cushioned walls welcomes you.  The previous
visitor to this room decorated the floor with yellow stains and an

Landing~
Standing at the top of the rather long flight of stairs, you hear low
murmurs escaping through the oaken door before you.  The landing is cramped,
causing those of larger stature to have to squeeze their bodies together,
shoved between the walls.  There is nothing barring your entrance through
the door, though perhaps a polite knock may be in order.

Administrative Offices~
You enter a very elegantly decorated reception area.  The walls are
panelled with slabs of cherrywood harvested from the Alanthian countryside,
and they are adorned with framed paintings filled with splashes of color.  A
Darvian-style desk sits in the center of the room upon an expertly woven
rug.  Copper oil lamps dangle from the ceiling, giving the room a warm, airy
feel.

Hallway~
The cherrywood panelling stretches along the walls of the hallway. 
Framed certificates of inspection from the Cherrywood Advisory Committee are
mounted on the walls.  A three-legged hickory table rests at the end of the
hall with an ivory bud vase atop a lace doily.  Two blue roses drape
gracefully out of the bud vase.  A silver placard on the western door
announces, "Vice Administrator".  A gold placard on the eastern door
indicates, "Head Administrator".

You find yourself in relatively cramped quarters.  Random papers are
scattered along the floor and the built-in shelving.  A pile of thin pink

small desk along the northern wall.  Unkept, shoddy books are jumbled around
the room.

Head Administrator's Office~
Everything is tidy and neat, almost obsessively so.  A portrait of a
human mercenary drawn in colored chalk is tacked to a dart board on the
eastern wall.  The scent of cheap cologne hovers in the air, catching in
your throat.  Beautifully leather-bound volumes of the newest in
psychological theories line the sturdy shelves along the edges of the north
and south walls.

Something causes you to skip gaily along the stairs, as if your body is
not your own.  Thoughts of green fields and daisy chains push violently into

lead down to the main floor.

The room is alive with activity.  Gnomes, dwarves, and trolls wearing

narcotic gas flowing through the mask covering his mouth and face.  Dark
marks have been made along the patient's forehead which seem to form into a
bullseye.

Shock Therapy~
Metal contraptions crowd the large room, as do upright metal rods
connected to a gurney.  Two amazon technicians are busy adjusting dials on
the machinery.  Looking up, you see metal shafts rising out of an opening in
the ceiling.  One of the amazons looks at you and winks, then pulls a large
lever.  A bolt of lightning cracks against the metal shafts and rushes along
the machinery, finally reaching its target, a patient lying prone on the
gurney and draped in a heavy cloth.  The patient's body jolts violently,
then settles back down.  You notice a serene look overcome his face.

This section of the ward is in serious disrepair.  The rubber padding
along the walls is peeling off in chunks, or perhaps torn off judging by the
jagged edges.  You notice a two inch thick layer of insulation is between
the padding and the wall, and where it has been removed, the repetitive
music vibrates through loudly.

Several little grey rubber balls bounce happily around the room,
appearing to almost be playing a game of tag.  A warm drop of water splashes

to start their freefall.  Sturdy double doors are to the west, and a bright
red circular symbol is painted upon them.

A dim warm glow illuminates the simple decor of this airy room.  A lithe
female grey-elf is perched on a circular stool next to a leather lounger.

Plastic tubing extends out of the patient's arm and leads up to a plastic
bag hanging from a metal pole.  The grey-elf is skimming through paperwork
attached to a clipboard while an orange liquid pours into the patient's arm.

edge of the room, providing a comfortable resting point.  Low vibrations

and an absent button eye sleeps peacefully on a pillow.

Metal cots with thin mattresses are arranged in a large circle, nearly
blocking each of the exits from this room.  The air is stifling and filled

swirls painted on them.

Rubber mats fill the floor of this gathering area, all facing a sturdy
rocking chair that has been painted a soft white.  In each corner of the

There are rubber grips secured to the center of each pole.  A large music
box is positioned next to the rocking chair.

institution.  Unfortunately, the window has been boarded up, quelling
outside influences.  Bunk beds line the walls, and several have strings of

it, tidy and bright.

Chiffon Ward~
Three over-sized mounds are strategically positioned in the room.  The
mounds are covered with sewn-on leather and seem to contain a soft, pebbly
substance that offers an incredibly comfortable seat.  Dried flowers have
been crushed along the floor, the resulting dust tickling your nose.  A
gilded birdcage hangs from the northwest corner of the ceiling.  Contained
within is a beautiful partrice with ivory colored feathers and a brilliant
orange beak.

This is where the ambulatory patients spruce themselves up after a long
day of therapy.  Semi-private bathing stalls fill this immense room, and the
cement floors are puddled with lukewarm water.  A pile of starched cloth
towels rest next to a laundry bin of discolored linens.

A massive painted carousel fills your sight.  You stand on a platform
near the top of it, and peering down, you see it stretches several flights
lower through the walls.  Immense horses grind slowly up and down as the
carousel plays the warped caliope tune at unimagineable decibals.  You have
discovered the source of the maddening music that has been chasing you
through the institution.
