Mouth of a Winding Canyon~
Pebbles tumble quietly down the jagged, rocky edges of a canyon that

stretches beyond the eastern horizon.  This is the western apex of the

canyon, where the ground is only beginning to sink.  Sharp, misshapen

slats of sandstone litter the sandy ground; to the west is a rock ledge

that runs far to the north and south.  A large, discolored slab stands

out in the west wall.  To the east begins a winding trail into the belly

of the canyon.

High On the Canyon Trail~
To the north is nothing but air, plummeting to the cavern floor, a

dizzying half-mile below.  The ground here is sandy and littered with

broken, jagged sandstones and a gritty, abrasive layer of sand.  To the

west, the trail meets the even land of the canyon's western mouth.  The

trail also drops sharply, then continues eastward on its descent to the

cavern floor.

To the south, the canyon wall rises monolithically, its crumbly sandstone

dropping pebbles and dust.  Across of mile of open air to the north is

the opposite side of this canyon, its jagged stones standing like

soldiers.  This trail heads off to the east on its gradual descent to the

canyon floor, or heads upward toward the canyon's western apex, which is

very close.

Steep Drop in Canyon Trail~
The trail heading toward the cavern floor was probably not made by hand,

because no rational being would have intentionally made the steep drop to

the north.  A jagged, steep, precarious slope, it drops almost straight

down to a rock ledge 15 feet below.  Two large, iron spikes have been

hammered into the ground, fragments of rope still clinging to them.  The

trail also heads southward around a large stone outcropping.

This is the intersection of a narrow sandtone ledge and a steep, sandy

incline.  The ledge heads off to the east along the south wall of the

canyon on its way to the floor.  The steep incline heads almost straight

up toward a trail that pushes off to the west.  The cavern floor is close

here - perhaps three stories below.  A gritty layer of sand covers this

ledge, demanding that travellers be cautious.

canyon rises mountainously to the south, its many jagged slats of

sandtone protruding like claws to rake the flesh of those who get too

close.  The canyon winds off into the distant east and west, while just a

few feet to the east the trail takes a sharp southward turn.

Sheltered in the shady nook where a rock outcropping meets the canyon's

south wall, this rock platform is a transition point.  To the north, a

narrow ledge curves around the outcropping.  To the east is long, sandy

seems rocky enough to provide handholds.

Large piles of stone suggest that someone has cleared the path before,

only to have the surrounding rock consume it again.  The trail seems to

This small rock shelf stands just a few feet above the canyon floor,

This junction is roughly midway between the eastern and western ends of

this long, sinuous canyon.  A dried-up riverbed forms a trail of sorts

that leads off to the east and west.  Additionally, a stone ramp heads

Stone Shelves in Canyon~
From the walls jut several small, stone shelves, littered with small

bones.  Most of the bones are scattered, but some are together in the

form of long, thick snake skeletons.  This is a long, straight shaft of

stone, heading far to the east.  A short distance to the west, the canyon

bends north.

Many of those closer to the ground are littered with bones.

These are the scattered bones of snakes, their small vertebrae lying

around like bleached-white twigs.  In some cases the skeletons are whole,

and in rare cases they still contain flesh, giving off a rancid, rotting

odor as they bake in the desert heat.

Sandstone Corridor~
This is the midpoint of a long corridor, which stretches east and west

through the blistering Naraki desert.  The ground here is tiled with

mudcracks, where the heat-blasted mud of the ancient riverbed was dried,

eventually turning to stone.  To the east is more of the canyon, while to

the west a ramp juts outward, offering a possible route to the surface.

This long canyon hall turns northward around a rough stone piling.  It is

easy to see how a river formed this canyon - the floor meandering like a

river.  Deep, jagged cracks scar the floor, where the mudcracks formed by

the ancient, now-dried river have petrified.

The canyon sweeps up from the south and gradually bends westward around a

massive stone abutment.  The stone to the south seems harder, less

maleable that the crumbling sandstone that forms the rest of the canyon. 

The hardness of the stone would explain why the river that formed this

cavern is broad and rocky - its floor piled with massive boulders

and hollows.  The baying of a lone coyote echoes far away.

Near the Canyon's End~
The canyon's west wall soars in the distance, dropping pebbles from its

crumbling ledges.  This short chamber heads east and west, the path

winding through mounds of fallen boulders.  There are several massive

sandstone slats here, stood upright against the walls, and angled

somewhat to look in on cavern trail.

This is the western pinnacle of the winding cavern.  The walls here are

narrow, closing in to a point.  To the east the canyon broadens as it

continues its way across the Naraki Desert.  To the south is a large,

shadowed alcove - the scent of woodsmoke comes from that direction.

Set deep into the wall, this alcove would be undetectable from above. 

The ashen remains of a campfire smolder here, wisps of smoke coiling then

dissipating in the dry desert air.  Someone has placed four large

sandstone blocks around the campfire.  Deeper into the alcove are four

dishevelled bedrolls, torn, sandy and worthless.

Perhaps it is a trick of the light, but the walls radiate a thousand

intricate colors - reds, yellows, and oranges of all shades blends into

one another, flaming on the rock points.  This stretch of canyon heads

far to the west, and just to the east is a massive mound of fallen rock,

obstructing the canyon trail.

floor of the canyon.  A pile of rock fifteen feet high obstructs the

The unmarked gravestone stands two feet high, and is of the classic,

arced shaped.  It is forged of black stone.  Strangely, it has been wiped

clean of the sand and dust that cover everything else.

Silent Corridor~
This is a short stretch toward the east end of this long, winding cavern. 

The cavern is narrow here, and grows narrower to the east at the canyon's

apex.  The looming walls close in here - this place is dark and strangely

cold.  The canyon heads west toward a bend, or to the east toward the

canyon's end.

Canyon's East End~
This narrow, triangular corridor is the eastern apex of this long,

snake-like canyon.  The walls are close and jagged; the floor is clotted

with an inch-thick layer of sand and rubble.  To the west, the canyon

broadens on its path through the desert.  To the south is a shady nook.

although anyone over five feet tall will have to crouch to fit.

Shady Nook - Mound of Stone~
These are close quarters - the walls and ceiling closing in, casting

deep, enveloping shadows.  To the north is canyon's eastern end - a

narrow, pointed little corridor laden with fallen rocks.  A heavy

sandstone slat lies heavily against the east wall, surrounded by small

footprints in the dust.

Canyon Hawk's Nest~
This broad, deep alcove is covered with a massive nest, easily large

enough to hold three trolls.  The nest is made from tree branches, sand,

rocks, and large animal bones.  Above is a sheer cliff, offering no way

up, but below are several stone shelves that could be climbed, albeit

with care.
