> Hah. It'd certainly be an interesting experiment. :P Anyone actually fancy
> trying this? ;)

I for one would like to see it implemented in some form or another. All
it needs is two muds to broadcast they're using a system such as this.
Then a few other muds with open minded administrators should follow suit.
Just post on usenet/mud connector. Avalanche...

My ring of contacts/expertise lies in the LP world and I'll be happy to
give what little advice I know. LP muds can accept mail-like packets and
so can query a central database of mudders. The big problem really lies
in getting a central site to set up which could be swarmed with traffic.
Alternatively, a peer-to-peer system can be set up where a request will
propagate to the rest of the muds but this would be far too demanding on
some muds and unreliable, given the nature of hobby muds.

All this talk about a working society which can self regulate. I thought
society was originally all about protection. My selfish nature states
that I will not share my food with the nextdoor neighbour unless it
benefits me.

Now, imagine I was self-sustaining (which I'm not). I can provide for
myself quite happily and sleep in some den. There are others who are
equal to me and sleep in dens not so far. They're a pest because
sometimes they steal my food when I go out hunting. One day, I shall find
a big bad stick and raid them. Teach them it's Bad to go around stealing.
Oops, off on a tangent. Anyway, this is the state of mudding right now.

Same scenario... One day, a bunch of rather tough dinosaurs came on the
scene. They ate Bernard and Big Bird when they went hunting. After a few
neighbours attempted to sort out the bunch of dinosaurs individually and
getting eaten, the remaining humans figured it'll be a Good Idea to band
together and beat up a few. After a quite successful spanking mission
(not wildly, just enuff), we figured it'll be quite cool to stick together
and make a town with rilly high walls to ward off the rest of the
dinosaurs.

I really am not sure how this related to the jerk problem but I thought
I'd say that externally imposed societies don't really seem to work.
Like, I used to be President of the Chinese Society around here, there was
a clause which states I can appoint any committee member to fill in the
role of another. I never used it coz I had no backing, it couldn't be
enforced and I had too much common sense to do such a thing on friends,
I'd rather they volunteer. It's especially hard on muds these days
because of the lack of respect from most individuals towards authority.
