UNLESS as you point out they stick out like a sore thumb, eg a giant > in a crowd of humans (not a dwarf - theyd get kinda hidden!). As I understand it this is because of the way the human mind handles groups of things. We are wired to handle individuals well, two ppl pretty well, three ok, 4 is starting to stretch it, 5 is about the limit. After that we usualy do well to start breaking them into groups of groups. (note, I am speaking in the general case here). The usual max is around 6-7 individual pieces of info (a person, a number, whatever). After that, we just see it all as a blob, unless we break it down into groups of groups. The reason it takes so long to scan a crowd is that you have to look at either individual faces, or small groups of people, and then shift your focus to another small area. > > ]north > > You are standing on a grassy knoll. > > There is a large crowd of people all around you. Randomness is well applied here, I believe. -Greg </PRE> <!--X-Body-of-Message-End--> <!--X-MsgBody-End--> <!--X-Follow-Ups--> <HR> <!--X-Follow-Ups-End--> <!--X-References--> <UL><LI><STRONG>References</STRONG>: <UL> <LI><STRONG><A NAME="00813" HREF="msg00813.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></STRONG> <UL><LI><EM>From:</EM> Matt Chatterley <root#mpc,dyn.ml.org></LI></UL></LI> </UL></LI></UL> <!--X-References-End--> <!--X-BotPNI--> <UL> <LI>Prev by Date: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00832.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Guilds & Politics [was Affecting the World]</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Next by Date: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00834.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Fear of magic (was:Usability and interface)</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Prev by thread: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00813.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Next by thread: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00820.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Index(es): <UL> <LI><A HREF="index.html#00833"><STRONG>Date</STRONG></A></LI> <LI><A HREF="thread.html#00833"><STRONG>Thread</STRONG></A></LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> <!--X-BotPNI-End--> <!--X-User-Footer--> <!--X-User-Footer-End--> <ul><li>Thread context: <BLOCKQUOTE><UL> <LI><STRONG>Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</STRONG>, <EM>(continued)</EM> <ul compact> <ul compact> <ul compact> <ul compact> <ul compact> <ul compact> <ul compact> <LI><strong><A NAME="00807" HREF="msg00807.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Stephen Zepp <a href="mailto:zoran#enid,com">zoran#enid,com</a>, Sun 14 Dec 1997, 01:47 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00808" HREF="msg00808.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Richard Woolcock <a href="mailto:KaVir#dial,pipex.com">KaVir#dial,pipex.com</a>, Sun 14 Dec 1997, 02:42 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00809" HREF="msg00809.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Stephen Zepp <a href="mailto:zoran#enid,com">zoran#enid,com</a>, Sun 14 Dec 1997, 03:16 GMT </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00813" HREF="msg00813.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Matt Chatterley <a href="mailto:root#mpc,dyn.ml.org">root#mpc,dyn.ml.org</a>, Sun 14 Dec 1997, 12:20 GMT <LI><strong><A NAME="00833" HREF="msg00833.html">Crowds and Recognition (Was: Introductions and )</A></strong>, s001gmu <a href="mailto:s001gmu#nova,wright.edu">s001gmu#nova,wright.edu</a>, Mon 15 Dec 1997, 03:48 GMT </LI> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00820" HREF="msg00820.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Adam Wiggins <a href="mailto:nightfall#user2,inficad.com">nightfall#user2,inficad.com</a>, Sun 14 Dec 1997, 22:41 GMT </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00827" HREF="msg00827.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Marian Griffith <a href="mailto:gryphon#iaehv,nl">gryphon#iaehv,nl</a>, Mon 15 Dec 1997, 00:41 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00851" HREF="msg00851.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Stephen Zepp <a href="mailto:zoran#enid,com">zoran#enid,com</a>, Thu 18 Dec 1997, 05:35 GMT </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00854" HREF="msg00854.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Introductions and</A></strong>, Matt Chatterley <a href="mailto:root#mpc,dyn.ml.org">root#mpc,dyn.ml.org</a>, Thu 18 Dec 1997, 08:24 GMT </LI> </UL> </LI> </ul> </ul> </ul> </ul> </ul> </ul> </ul> </LI> </UL></BLOCKQUOTE> </ul> <hr> <center> [ <a href="../">Other Periods</a> | <a href="../../">Other mailing lists</a> | <a href="/search.php3">Search</a> ] </center> <hr> </body> </html>
