In order to install Daleken, you will first need the complete distribution,
available <a href="download.html#all">here</a>. Then simply follow these
simple steps:
<ol>
  <li>Extract the files:
    <blockquote><code>
      bzip2 -dc Daleken-1.12-all.tar.bz2 | tar -xf -
    </blockquote></code></li>
  <li>Change to the <code>DalekenMUD/src/</code> directory.</li>
  <li>
    Compile the code:
    <blockquote><code>
      make
    </blockquote></code>
    Hopefully this works, if it doesn't read the documentation
    more thouroughly for some hints.
  </li>
  <li>Run the server:
    <blockquote><code>
      ../bin/start
    </blockquote></code></li>
  <li>Connect using your favourite client, or by using telnet:
    <blockquote><code>
      <a href="telnet://localhost:12345/">telnet localhost 12345</a>
    </blockquote></code></li>
  <li><a href="#Build an Immortal!">Build an Immortal!</a></li>
</ol>
The README file contained in the root directory has more detailed instructions.

In order to install Daleken under Windoze, you will first need
<a href="download.html#all">the complete distribution</a>,
<a href="download.html#bin">the .exe file</a>,
<a href="download.html#Cygwin1.dll">Cygwin1.dll</a> and
<a href="download.html#bzip2">bzip2</a>.
Then follow the steps below:

<ol>
  <li>Extract the .zip files using <a href="http://www.winzip.com/">Winzip</a>
    or something similar.</li>
  <li>Extract the main distribution (open a DOS box to do this).
    <blockquote><code>
      bzip2 -d Daleken-1.12-all.tar.bz2
    </blockquote></code>
    This creates a file called <code>Daleken-1.12-all.tar</code>.&nbsp;
    To extract this, use <a href="http://www.winzip.com/">Winzip</a>.
    <br><b>Note:</b> As of version 8 of Winzip, the tar extraction may not
    work properly, Daleken has several empty directories that are used for
    player files under <code>DalekenMUD\data\player\</code>. If these
    directories aren't created you will have to create them by hand, there
    is one for each letter of the alphabet (i.e. 'a', 'b', 'c', ...), these
    correspond to the first letter of the character's name. If you only
    want to test the mud with one character you only need to create the
    directory for that character.</li>
  <li>Move <code>daleken.exe</code> to the <code>DalekenMUD\area\</code>
    directory.</li>
  <li>Run the server by double clicking on the <code>daleken.exe</code>
    file.</li>
  <li>Connect using your favourite client, or by using telnet:
    <blockquote><code>
      <a href="telnet://localhost:12345/">telnet localhost 12345</a>
    </blockquote></code></li>
  <li><a href="#Build an Immortal!">Build an Immortal!</a></li>
</ol>

<a name="Build an Immortal!"></a><h3>Build an Immortal!</h3>
If you think that this sounds like the definitive guide to cheating on a
grand scale, you are pretty damn close, but it isn't really cheating so...

<ol>
<li>Start the game as a regular character, I've found that a Human Warrior
is quick and easy to get to the next level, you can change your race
and class later.</li>

<li>Play until you get to level two so you can save, then quit the game.</li>

<li>Go to the <code>DalekenMUD/player/</code> directory and locate your
player file, it will be in a sub directory corresponding to the initial
letter of your character's name.</li>

<li>Edit the file with a text editor and change the line that has your level
  as described below:
  <blockquote>
    <code>Level 2; &nbsp; </code>becomes<code> &nbsp; Level 1000;</code>
  </blockquote></li>

<li>Add the following line:
  <blockquote><code>
    Trust 1000;
  </code></blockquote>
  and further down in the file, just past the line that has
  <code>PcData {</code> add another line:  <blockquote><code>
    ImmSkill "imtlset";
  </code></blockquote></li>

<li>Log back into the game, there are a few commands you need to enter
to get your character into an optimal setup:
<blockquote><code>
  imtlset self + all
  <br>sset self all 100
  <br>nolag
  <br>mset self security 10
  <br>wiznet +all (you need to play around with this a bit)
</code></blockquote></li>

<li>Now you have an immortal character you can play around with
all the commands, use the <code>wizhelp</code> command to get a list of
immortal commands, try all the helps and play around with all the
commands.</li>

<li>Play around a bit, it really is the only way to find out how to use
your immortal.&nbsp; Obey the urge to make yourself a 1000/1000 sword,
kill a few mobs (explore how many ways you can kill mobs, there are
plenty), try out all the skills (there are heaps so this can be an
ongoing thing) and just generally have fun mucking about with your new-found
powers.&nbsp; Now you know how immortals on all those MUDs you play have
it, and you have it even better!</li>
