On the side of the path an old oak tree stand quietly watching each and every passerby. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11602 D11 ~ ~ 0 -1 42511 S #11602 The Cross Roads~ ~ Stepping out of the forest, you stand in the middle of a small town's main intersection. It looks like a small mining camp has grown into a town here. You notice a huge gate to the south and Turk's Trading Post to the east. Beside the gate you notice a small plaque. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11601 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11603 D2 ~ gate~ 3 -1 11606 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11605 S #11603 Turk's Trading Post~ ~ Entering "Turks Trading Post", you see a room filled with skins and barrels of various types of liquids. Leaning against the walls you see many weapons and armors of all shapes and sizes waiting for some adventurer to purchase them. You notice a huge skull with two sharp tusks protruding out from the lower jaw bone. You are in awe of its size and wonder what creature it had once been. Returning behind the counter, you can easily see that Turk limps with his right leg. ~ 1 0 13 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11602 R M 0 11604 1 11603 R G 0 11609 1 R G 0 11610 1 S #11604 The Happy Grocer~ ~ Entering "The Happy Grocer," you find a small but modest little shop with the smell of fresh bread baking in the back. Other food and drink items lining the shelves waiting for purchase. Behind the counter you find Maw Kettle rocking away in a small chair. Maw Kettle looks to be well into her hundreds but some how you feel that she isn't as weak as she might appear to be. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11605 R M 0 11603 1 11604 R G 0 11608 1 R G 0 11607 1 S #11605 West of the Cross Roads~ ~ Walking through the western section of town, you can tell that this is the wealthier portion of town. Looking around you see that at least this part of town has a few more shops in it. To the north you see "The Happy Grocer," to the west .... "The Miners Mercantile," and to the south..."Kane's Kross Roads Tavern". ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11604 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11602 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11692 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11666 S #11606 The Main Gate~ ~ Walking through the entrance to the mine, you stop to consider how many other brave and bold warriors and adventurers have made the same steps and yet had never been able to make the step to get out of the mine. Will this be you final look at the sky? Perhaps, yet with a glint of boldness in your eye and confidence in your skill, you make your way in. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ gate~ 3 -1 11602 D5 ~ ~ 0 -1 11607 S #11607 Passageway Down~ ~ Walking down some very old and ancient steps you notice that they seem to have been carved out of the earth with a great deal of workmanship. You work your way deeper into the mine your senses get sharper and fear of the unknown edges its way into your bones. ~ 1 0 13 D4 ~ ~ 0 -1 11606 D5 ~ ~ 0 -1 11608 S #11608 The Landing~ ~ At the end of the steps a large complex of mine tunnels stretches out before you. Examining your surroundings you notice that the walls are very dark in color and the floor is covered with several inches of soot and dirt. The high ceilings allow for the passage of large beasts. Let's just hope that none of these beasts bump into you. ~ 1 1024 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11609 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11613 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11610 D4 ~ ~ 0 -1 11607 R M 0 11605 1 11608 S #11609 Eastern Cavern~ ~ Walking through the eastern caverns, you can see that it really hasn't been used or worked on in a very long time. The soil shows to be a greyish color which might prove to be very interesting to Rusty the mineralogist. The pathway before you is very dark and you lift your light trying to catch a small glimpse of what might be there. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11614 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11608 R M 0 11606 1 11609 S #11610 Western Cavern~ ~ Entering the western portion of the cavern it becomes aparent that a lot of people have traveled through here. Some of the footprints seem to indicate that the person was running very fast. Looking ahead you try to see what might be laying in wait for you as well. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11608 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11612 S #11611 Dead End~ ~ The tunnel comes to a dead end here. You notice that the floors and the walls show signs that a horribly violent struggle has recently taken place here. A pickaxe lays on the floor as though it had been dropped and forgotten about. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11612 S #11612 Western Cavern~ ~ You have wandered into a newer section of the mine. The walls and floor all look freshly made and are still heavy with moisture from the ground water. The dirt path splits into two different directions here, one proceeding south and the other turns to the west. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11610 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11615 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11611 S #11613 Main Cavern~ ~ Walking along a dusty path, you notice that a lot of tracks have been made in the dirt on the ground. One set of tracks catches your eye. It looks like a person running at full speed, perhaps even in a panic, had raced through here. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11608 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11614 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11616 R M 0 11607 2 11613 R M 0 11607 2 11613 S #11614 Eastern Cavern~ ~ The mine shaft comes to a turn here allowing you too see some deep marks that are in the walls. As you hold up your light you suddenly realize that these deep marks are actually huge claw marks made by some kind of large beast or animal. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11609 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11613 S #11615 Dead End~ ~ You have come to a dead end. Stopping to catch your breath you start examining the area. The soil of the walls seems to change from a deep dark rich color to the grey color of poor soil. That might be the reason that they have stopped digging on this portion of the mine. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11612 R M 0 11606 2 11615 S #11616 The Rusty Old Ladder~ ~ Your on top of the ledge that drops into a dark abyss below. A rusty old ladder has been built into the rock wall and after you examine it a little bit you determine that it is sturdy and safe dispite its age. A small plaque has been embedded within the wall next to the ladder that looks like it might be extremely important. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11613 D5 ~ ~ 0 -1 11621 S #11617 Eastern Cave~ ~ Walking into the room, you notice the smell of sulfer and notice a huge stone bridge that allows safe passage over a shiftly moving river of very hot lava. More of the huge foot prints show themselves in the dirt path going over the bridge. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11618 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11624 S #11618 Eastern Cave~ ~ You see a huge battered stone bridge heading west over a racing river of hot lava. A tunnel to the south shows more signs of the huge foot prints you saw coming into this portion of the mine. You steady yourself and prepare for the horrors that might lay ahead. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11625 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11617 S #11619 Western Cave~ ~ The western cavern's walls are extremely moist to the touch, a sure sign of a near by water source. The sound of splashing coming from the southwest confirms your suspicions. Remembering the dangers of water comes quickly to your thoughts and with a chuckle you continue on your way. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11620 D9 ~ ~ 0 -1 11627 S #11620 Western Cave~ ~ The western cavern is a fairly large tunnel. The walls are very smooth to the touch and the ceiling is well supported by an ample supply of wooden beams. A cold breeze finds its way across your face and you wonder where it might have come from. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11621 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11619 S #11621 Bottom of the Ladder~ ~ Reaching the bottom of an old ladder, you look up and can see a slight hint of light. The tunnel splits off into three seperate directions here. The passage to the west has a faint glow coming from around a bend. The eastern passage looks like it has been used recently, however the southern passage seems desolate and cold. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11622 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11628 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11620 D4 ~ ~ 0 -1 11616 S #11622 Eastern Cave~ ~ Traveling through the eastern cavern, your greeted by a big rush of extremely hot air. The cavern walls are warm to the touch and the sound of grumbling can heard farther to the east. The dirt path shows signs of being a heavily used pathway. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11623 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11621 S #11623 Eastern Cave~ ~ The floor of the tunnel here is littered with trash of all kinds. It even looks like maybe a barricade had been here once. The heat of the air is hot here making you sweat a little. Looking at the walls you can see a tint of a deep red substance running streaks through the walls. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11624 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11622 S #11624 Eastern Cave Cross Roads~ ~ Entering into a huge cavern, you see a very huge lava flow is running through the eastern portion of this cave. You are startled by a foot print on the ground, the shear size of it could only mean one thing. ........GIANTS.......... ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11617 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11629 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11623 S #11625 Eastern Cave~ ~ Standing in the middle of the room, you study the strange foot prints and are puzzled as to why they just seem to stop at this room. Looking around, you notice that the mine shaft walls have changed from a rough rocky surface to that of cut stone you would find in a castle or building. Looks like you might have stumbled into something very strange. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11618 D1 ~ door~ 3 -1 11626 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11630 S #11626 Entrance to the Lava Caves~ ~ The room radiates with the heat from the nearby lava flows making the air hot and dry. You realize you are getting closer to the core of the lava's source. The walls form a ancient stone corridor and are covered with gyphs and rune symbols. Be on guard this doesnt look like a place for mortal's. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11631 D3 ~ door~ 3 -1 11625 S #11627 Edge of the Pool~ ~ Your standing at the edge of a magical shimmering pool of water. It glows with a strange radiance that seems to be coming from nowhere. The water swirls with ripples across its surface. You wonder if there might be something under the water causing it. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11632 D6 ~ ~ 0 -1 11619 S #11628 Southern Path~ ~ You're on the southern path, wandering through a maze of tunnels and passage ways. You realize that you are nearing the heart of the mine. With the bizarre monsters that you have already encountered, your pulse quickens with the possibility of even more frightening monsters that might wait ahead of you. To the south, you can barely make out an object that is large and black. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11621 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11633 S #11629 Eastern Cave~ ~ Standing in the middle of the room, you can feel an extreme amount of heat coming from the eastern wall. Examining the wall closer, you can see that it is glowing red from the heat. To the south you hear a faint clatter of metal. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11624 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11634 S #11630 Eastern Cave~ ~ You come to a dead end. This room looks like it has been untouched for hundreds of years. The walls are the same cut stone like in the room before. The dust and dirt on the floor haven't been disturbed for an extremely long time. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11625 S #11631 Lava Cave~ ~ The passage opens up at an angle into a larger area. What lays before you is a strange mix of finely cut stone walls and walk ways as well as sculpted rune covered columns that support the ceiling. Yet at the same time the whole area has been torn and rendered by the torrents of mother earth. Huge areas have been opened and now expose blistering pools of lava. The bridge radiates an evil that sends cold chills down your spine. Beside the bridge, you see the remains of a sign. The darkness makes it only possible for you to see just the limited space around you. A big stalagmite has pierced the ceiling here. Being careful to watch your step you manage to avoid the pool of lava. A sound in the southwest corner of the room catches your attention. It is constructed from the liter and debris that you saw in the other rooms. A huge wooden beam supports the ceiling here. Upon a closer look at the wood, you find alot of it missing as though some beast had mauled it over and over with steel spikes. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11645 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11643 D8 ~ ~ 0 -1 11654 S #11645 Entrance into the Tor Lair~ ~ Bones of the dead greet your eyes as you enter into a labyrinthine complex of passage ways. The blood and bones of fallen warriors are scattered every where and the stench of foul rotting corpses and animal excretions premeates the air. Howls and guttural noises fill your ears at a deafening pitch. A wave of heat, coming from the east, makes you start to sweat. The floor looks very unstable and gets worse to the east. As you look around, you try to make out the shapes and shadows that seem to be moving around in the darkness. Fear grips deeply within your heart. You wipe your forehead of the dripping sweat that has beaded up on your brow. Clutching your weapon to gather strength from it. Heaven help those who might stray into your path. Valon the ruler of the lands captured and locked the mighty beasts in a maze near this room. The writing goes on but the words have faded near the end. Studying the writing it tells of an ancient race of giants that had once walked and ruled the lands. The city that had once stood and is now buried beneath a mile of stone and dirt was once called Torin. It was ruled by a supreme ruler named Valon, who captured a race of beasts called Tors. Touching a nearby wall you recoil as you encounter the slickness of it. You check to see if it might be a possible water source and find a nice reddish tickle flowing down the wall. Looking up, you're horrified to find that a corpse has been stuffed up into a tiny alcove near the ceiling. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11654 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11652 S #11654 Tor Sanctum~ ~ You have reached the center of the Tor warren. A massive wooden column some fifty feet around and stands here like a sentinel of the caves watching young bold adventurers struggle to maintain their lives. Dark shadows move about from place to place. On the wall you discover some more ancient writings. Bound and determined to understand what this message means you so you take a moment to decypher the inscription. After awhile you uncover its meaning. It reads: As I take my last breath, I pass on this small bit of help in hopes that the next traveler might live longer than I did - Tors are susceptible to the power of the heaven. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11656 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11654 S #11656 Tor Sanctum~ ~ You have found the Tor's water supply. An old crumbling well sits off in the southeast corner of the room. At first glance, the water appears to be safe to drink. After a few moments you realize that being that this is the Tor's drinking source it is also most likely well traveled. You'd better be moving fast before the Tors arrive and decided to add your bones to their large collection on the floor. You start to go northeast, but jump back as you hear the floor creak and feel how unsteady it is. You fear the floor will collapse if you go that way. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11647 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11655 S #11657 The Lava Cave~ ~ Entering a large hallway, you see a hall lit by large torches affixed to the wall. Grand drawings on the wall depict the battle between Lord Valon and the Torain beasts of hell, which ends with a symbol of a very black key. You ponder the meaning as you move past them. ~ 1 0 13 D2 ~ ~ 0 -1 11663 D7 ~ ~ 0 -1 11649 S #11658 Inner Tor Sanctum~ ~ Entering a very wide room, you notice that the floor has several large swaths of grass and fur laid out in several different places, possibly the Tor roost. You can see a very dim light coming from the area southeast. Knowingly close to the very heart of the Tor domain you take a breath as your final fear of Tor's is about to come to an end. one way or the other. ~ 1 0 13 D6 ~ ~ 0 -1 11654 R M 0 11613 1 11658 S #11660 Weapons Barracks~ ~ Standing before a huge anvil and a pit of coals attached to a giant bellow, you realize that you're in the smith shop. Giant sets of armor and weapons of all kinds are either hung on the wall or leaning against it. The smithy has been extremely busy from the looks of it. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ ~ 0 -1 11661 S #11661 The Lair of Valon~ ~ Walking down the corridor you notice two huge giant spears are crossed and mounted on the walls. The ceiling holds a picture of a very huge angry and evil creature with powerful claws on its massive arms. Large tusks come out on both sides of its mouth. From the number of people fighting it in the picture, you judge the creature to stand some 30 to 40 hands tall. The carpet on the ground shows its obvious quality. You instantly realize that this is the place of a mighty king. Hearing a small sound from down the corridor you wonder if you should investigate it. ~ 1 0 13 D1 ~ door~ 3 -1 11663 D3 ~ ~ 0 -1 11661 S #11663 The Dead End~ ~ Entering the final portion of the mine you easily notice that the rest of the cave has been caved in. This prevents you from traveling any deeper into the mine. Carved stone pillars line the walls like the sentinals of a royal guard. The dark redness that covers all the walls, is the blood of countless travelers who have found their final resting place and demise at the claws of this ruthless animal. The body of a large animal lays decaying on the ground. The cavern is filled with all the colors of the rainbow caused by light reflecting off the crystals that are embedded into the cavern walls. As you peer upwards into the shaft, you find that it extends a great distance upward. Maybe this was the first attempt to mine these caves. An old piano rests in the far corner dusty and dirty from the lack of use. A sense of despair hangs in the air of the tavern like the people are waiting for something to happen. You wonder what it might be. ~ 1 0 13 D0 ~ ~ 0 -1 11692 S #11692 Kane's Kross Roads Tavern~ ~ Finding yourself in a small dingy tavern and thirsty for a drink, you make your way to the bar to find a seat, noticing the smell of smoke and alcohol mixed with laughter makes you feel right at home. The proprietor of the tavern is Kane, a large man who is sitting behind the bar waiting for your order. The room extends farther to the south. Without any further warning, the ledge cracks under your weight. CRACK !
