Goes for designers too. Put more than one deigner on a project and they'll each come out thinking that they are and have created something not-quite-the-same as what the other thinks. Ditto of course for the players. Consider UOL and the people trapping and hoarding monsters behind crate fences: Some players consider that an abuse of the system and an outright bug (as was discussed here). I expect that some of your people did too. You even went so far as to (slightly) change the game mechanics (the monsters push the crates as they pace) to modify the usefullness of the unexpected advantages on an unintended side-effect. Translation: Even game designers will disagree about when the line has been crossed in their own games. Certainly I can recall having game designers tell me about the unexpected advantages players were taking of side-effects in their games, initally thinking that the players were "crossing the line" and then being persuaded that it really was Okay and even laudable (and visa versa). -- J C Lawrence Internet: claw#kanga,nu (Contractor) Internet: coder#kanga,nu ---------(*) Internet: claw#under,engr.sgi.com ...Honourary Member of Clan McFud -- Teamer's Avenging Monolith...

References:

[MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign)

From: "Koster, Raph" <rkoster#origin,ea.com>

Prev by Date: [MUD-Dev] Re: Recursive look

Next by Date: [MUD-Dev] Re: PDMud (was Re: Bruce Sterling on Virtual Community goals)

Prev by thread: [MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign)

Next by thread: [MUD-Dev] Lengthy Palace study

Index(es):

Date

Thread

Thread context:

[MUD-Dev] Re: evil - good realism, (continued)

[MUD-Dev] Re: evil - good realism, Vladimir Prelovac tomcat#galeb,etf.bg.ac.yu, Thu 22 Oct 1998, 13:17 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: evil - good realism, Vadim Tkachenko vt#freehold,crocodile.org, Fri 23 Oct 1998, 04:00 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: Hacks/Diablo/etc (was: Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign)), quzah [sotfhome] quzah#softhome,net, Wed 21 Oct 1998, 07:13 GMT
[MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign), Koster, Raph rkoster#origin,ea.com, Wed 21 Oct 1998, 02:15 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign), J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Thu 22 Oct 1998, 03:23 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Lengthy Palace study, Koster, Raph rkoster#origin,ea.com, Wed 21 Oct 1998, 02:13 GMT
[MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign), Koster, Raph rkoster#origin,ea.com, Tue 20 Oct 1998, 15:04 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign), Vadim Tkachenko vt#freehold,crocodile.org, Wed 21 Oct 1998, 00:38 GMT

<Possible follow-up(s)>

[MUD-Dev] Re: Trusting the Client (Re: Laws of Online World D esign), quzah [sotfhome] quzah#softhome,net, Tue 20 Oct 1998, 16:24 GMT

[ Other Periods | Other mailing lists | Search ]
