> M59 servers run on NT boxes, though the admin software runs on W95. Were I
> to do this again (ahem), I'd more likely put the server itself on a
> high-powered Unix box and make the admin tools W95-accessible. OTOH, the
> difference in robustness, scalability, and overall price-performance for,
> say, high-end Sun servers vs. NT servers is becoming less and less clear as
> time goes on.

Sorry, couldn't resist - why don't you just put the Linux on the Intel
platform and enjoy all benefits of UNIX without a price of a) Sun
hardware, b) Sun software, c) third-party products, d) product support,
... z) add yourself.

See, 3 years ago I was told to install WinNT as a server by a person who
was terribly difficult to explain to that WinNT doesn't support the
Email on dialup lines, dropping connection every 5 minutes and lagging
in between (which is a usual state of a telephone line in almost all
xSU). I decided to silently ignore the man (boss, in fact) and installed
Linux as a mail/file/print/whatever was needed server overnight on 486
Compaq machine with 8 megs of RAM, for the office of 20 computers. It
still works over there, unchanged, and nobody since then blames me for
irresponsible choice (they tried to, but didn't have other arguments
than 'nobody supports it'). Now the network grew to like 50 companies in
one city (all connected) and God knows how much in 5 other cities
accross Ukraine, and 3 Linux boxes support all that infrastructure
(along with Cisco 2511 routers). And, this is a securities trading
system corporate network.

The difference in price between Sun and NT may become less clear with
time, for both Sun is becoming cheaper (?) and NT becoming more
expensive. But, the fundamental flaw of not supporting multiple users at
the kernel level (don't tell me anything about the third-party products
which allow that on NT), as well as inability to maintenance NT box
remotely, will not go away.

Mark my words, Microsoft UNIX is on its way.
