Poor SMP support, comparitively poor compilers (eg poor standards compliance got g++), little to no support for high-end hardware (example high end: 4-way fault tolerant cluster with each node having 32 64bit CPU's, 64Gig of RAM, etc). Linux scales, but only at the low end, and very poorly in the SMP arena. Conversely, Solaris, HP-UX, IRIX AIX and company scale very very nicely into these domains. A more interesting if subtle argument would be why (that I know of) are none of the current commercial offerings using AS/400's, S/390's or other mainframe technologies for their MUD servers. In a more than a few ways they are ideally suited. -- J C Lawrence Internet: claw#null,net ----------(*) Internet: coder#ibm,net ...Honourary Member of Clan McFud -- Teamer's Avenging Monolith... </PRE> <!--X-Body-of-Message-End--> <!--X-MsgBody-End--> <!--X-Follow-Ups--> <HR> <!--X-Follow-Ups-End--> <!--X-References--> <UL><LI><STRONG>References</STRONG>: <UL> <LI><STRONG><A NAME="00441" HREF="msg00441.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] OT: Clients</A></STRONG> <UL><LI><EM>From:</EM> Vadim Tkachenko <vadimt#4cs,com></LI></UL></LI> </UL></LI></UL> <!--X-References-End--> <!--X-BotPNI--> <UL> <LI>Prev by Date: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00487.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] OT: Linux g++</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Next by Date: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00489.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Source Code Release</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Prev by thread: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00448.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] OT: Clients</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Next by thread: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00498.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Index(es): <UL> <LI><A HREF="index.html#00488"><STRONG>Date</STRONG></A></LI> <LI><A HREF="thread.html#00488"><STRONG>Thread</STRONG></A></LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> <!--X-BotPNI-End--> <!--X-User-Footer--> <!--X-User-Footer-End--> <ul><li>Thread context: <BLOCKQUOTE><UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00433" HREF="msg00433.html">RE: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></strong>, Koster, Raph <a href="mailto:rkoster#origin,ea.com">rkoster#origin,ea.com</a>, Thu 12 Feb 1998, 15:12 GMT <UL> <li><Possible follow-up(s)><br> <LI><strong><A NAME="00438" HREF="msg00438.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></strong>, Mike Sellers <a href="mailto:mike#online-alchemy,com">mike#online-alchemy,com</a>, Thu 12 Feb 1998, 18:42 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00441" HREF="msg00441.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] OT: Clients</A></strong>, Vadim Tkachenko <a href="mailto:vadimt#4cs,com">vadimt#4cs,com</a>, Thu 12 Feb 1998, 20:57 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00448" HREF="msg00448.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] OT: Clients</A></strong>, Adam Wiggins <a href="mailto:nightfall#user1,inficad.com">nightfall#user1,inficad.com</a>, Fri 13 Feb 1998, 12:25 GMT </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00488" HREF="msg00488.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] OT: Clients</A></strong>, coder <a href="mailto:coder#ibm,net">coder#ibm,net</a>, Mon 16 Feb 1998, 11:40 GMT </LI> </UL> </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00498" HREF="msg00498.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></strong>, coder <a href="mailto:coder#ibm,net">coder#ibm,net</a>, Mon 16 Feb 1998, 22:48 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00504" HREF="msg00504.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></strong>, Caliban Tiresias Darklock <a href="mailto:caliban#darklock,com">caliban#darklock,com</a>, Tue 17 Feb 1998, 00:52 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00516" HREF="msg00516.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></strong>, Travis Casey <a href="mailto:efindel#polaris,net">efindel#polaris,net</a>, Wed 18 Feb 1998, 04:41 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00534" HREF="msg00534.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Clients</A></strong>, Jon Leonard <a href="mailto:jleonard#divcom,umop-ap.com">jleonard#divcom,umop-ap.com</a>, Fri 20 Feb 1998, 09:42 GMT </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL></BLOCKQUOTE> </ul> <hr> <center> [ <a href="../">Other Periods</a> | <a href="../../">Other mailing lists</a> | <a href="/search.php3">Search</a> ] </center> <hr> </body> </html>
