> > M59 servers run on NT boxes, though the admin software runs on W95. Were I
> > to do this again (ahem), I'd more likely put the server itself on a
> > high-powered Unix box and make the admin tools W95-accessible. OTOH, the
> > difference in robustness, scalability, and overall price-performance for,
> > say, high-end Sun servers vs. NT servers is becoming less and less clear as
> > time goes on.
>
> Sorry, couldn't resist - why don't you just put the Linux on the Intel
> platform and enjoy all benefits of UNIX without a price of a) Sun
> hardware, b) Sun software, c) third-party products, d) product support,
> ... z) add yourself.
> [snip]
> The difference in price between Sun and NT may become less clear with
> time, for both Sun is becoming cheaper (?) and NT becoming more
> expensive.

I like this line. :)

> But, the fundamental flaw of not supporting multiple users at
> the kernel level (don't tell me anything about the third-party products
> which allow that on NT), as well as inability to maintenance NT box
> remotely, will not go away.
>
> Mark my words, Microsoft UNIX is on its way.

Bill Gates: "Windows NT *is* UNIX." (sorry, the source eludes me at
the moment)

The Windows enthusiast at our office was jumping up and down about Windows
NT now supporting remote logins (something called 'Hydra'?) the other day.
I had trouble containing my excitement at this breakthrough new technology.

*shudder* One of the machines I have to use from time to time is running
NT, and I get to watch it crash every single day. (That blue text screen
filled with register dumps sends a shiver down my spine every time.)
I would hate to imagine what it would be like to do actual development on
such a platform; we're only using it to run the software that handles our
motion capture system.

On the upside, I got my girlfriend's computer set up with Linux, XFree86, and
Afterstep, and now she's a total convert. She wants me to go ahead
and format the other partition (currently occupied by Win98). Of course,
I'm pretty sure that the thing that won her over was being able use xlock
pyro as her background, but hey, whatever it takes. One more convert for
the Linux underground army. Invasion of Redmond, VA, USA is planned soon.
