My original question ( I see I didn't know quite what I was
talking about then ) was about BOTH socket and telnet
programing. BTW, I read the Beej page and it helped answer a
whole pile of questions for me. While I'm writing, I might
as well ask if anyone knows where a list of the ANSI (
ASCII? ) color codes and the like are.

Why I was building my own MUD was three-fold: First of all,
when you have built the MUD Server from the ground up, you
know it by heart, and so any improvements are made easier
and probably work better. Second, it seems to be the best
way for me to learn programming is to tinker, rtfm, tinker,
ask questions, tinker, etc.. Third, while Diku-style MUDs (
Especially my home programming turf of CircleMUD ) are
pretty easy to poke around in, I find that I can't get
support for a lot of the features I want without either
going through the long process of coding the new feature to
fix the new MUD, then patching all the bugs as they pop up,
or grabing a patch off of one of the many patch sites, and
working out the bugs in THAT. Then I often find myself
adding to and tweaking the patches, and in the end it gets
real confusing and irregular no matter how much I comment
and pretty up the code .... So I decided that I would design
as simple a MUD platform as I can, that is easily expandable
and contains a good number of features, like an
easy-to-customize channel system, a menu/command-line on
line creation system and a good in code text-editor, stuff
like that ...
