One possibilty would be to make the item sucesible (sp?) to damage and flag

this should get you rid of the item sooner or later.

the other possibility would be to make a grand quest where at the end the
items are destroyed, because of 
some magical wave (or something).

this solution however will surely turn up to complaining side of players,
but you can always reward them 
with a nice item ( that is not as strong or out of place). besides when the
quest is really well done, 
they might even accept it without a word. especially if you tell them
beforehand:
like a mage has created all the items of this type, now word is spread that
the mage has gone nuts.
the players should kill the mage as he treats their hometown (or something).
you can even tell them
that the item may be nuked when the mage is killed, but also tell them that
the mage can sometimes 
control the person wielding it through the item. ( when you take over a char
and do something nasty
i think they will even _want_ to get rid of the item.)

just a thought...
