I don't believe use cases to be useful in this particular context. I am of
the view that they are only worth it when you have a customer requesting a
specific software system from you, and you are using the Use Case Diagrams
to support some kind of presentation of your understanding of their
requirements for the system.
In software which is specified by the producing organisation - eg software
written for the general public - that is no customer has been involved in
the development process - there is no such presentation, and use cases have
a lot less value.
In fact, in these cases, I would argue that use cases are not needed at all,
and more traditional documentation would suffice - such as Word documents,
HTML pages, PDF files, etc.
For muds, the only really useful parts of the UML seem to be class diagrams,
supported by interaction and state diagrams at points of high complexity. Of
course this is purely IMHO, and I would welcome alternative perspectives on
this issue.

PS As I complete each subsystem of my mud, I'll be posting the corresponding
UML diagrams to the web - specificially to invite comments/criticisms, but
also to share my ideas.
