> of the game. Certainly I've withheld myself from it partially due
> to the fact that I realise how complex, difficult, and
> time-consuming it would be learn, let alone gain even a pitiful

Diplomacy is probably one of the most intense games around. A log of a
diplomacy game looks uncannily similar to Greg Munt's recent post on the
administration of his old mud. (Sorry Greg, but the game is really
like that).
The rules are deceptively simple, only about 9 pages. The game board is
probably equivalent to Risk. And one only starts with 3 or 4 pieces and
wins with around 18. OTOH, the rules for baseball are several hundred
pages.
I think it's probably the best strategic level role-playing game around.

Oh, I can't resist. Something I can crow about...
I've played in the Origins and GenCon tournaments about a dozen times
and usally make it into the semi-finals. The last time I played, I made
it into final round and drew Italy. On the Email judges I broke into the
top 100 list a couple of years ago, but I haven't played in awhile.
I'm much better in a FTF game. :)
