>> Probably true of most mud developers. I have no interest in
making
>> this pursuit a hobby for myself. It's a career. Which is why I
>> don't really fit in with the mud development community.
>I'd probably fit closer to a religious crusade, but then I don't
admit
>that (often). I'm finding increasingly that my motives are becoming
>based on philosophic principles rather than meterial goals (an age
>factor?).

I doubt it's an age factor, since that's rather how I feel myself. I'm
in it for the sake of the state of the art, so to speak. I actually do
not see myself doing this as a career my whole life. At some point
I'll probably backtrack and go back to some of the other things that
have been central parts of my life: music, writing, etc.

Then again, doing it as a religious crusade gets lots of players
saying you're on a hobbyhorse, grinding an ideological axe, etc (the
latter is a direct quote from a newsgroup post I read today). And ya
know what, they're right. :) As long as I don't cross over into
fanaticism, I'll feel OK about it. ;) (Of course, if I did cross over,
it's in the nature of fanaticism not to notice, so maybe the kind
members of the list will point it out to me!)

I'd be curious to hear what the motivations of those on the list are.
Or as a broader topic: what do people see as motives for people
crafting muds? One of the primary motivations I have seen in the past
is, "to make a game like the one I used to play until they changed it
on me." How much of the stagnation of mud development do you think is
attributable to this motive?
