Something interesting happened today while I was working at home (yes,
despite the huge distraction of Mud-Dev, I actually do real work). I
thought it would be of interest.

My son's computer (at home) is connected to a dedicated internet phone
line. So it is the one I use to get mail, ftp, etc. Being a WIN 95 machine,
it got goofy and I had to reboot it. I forgot he has it configured to
automatically load ICQ for communication with his UO guild members. So ICQ
was announcing to the world that Led of the Knights Templar on the Great
Lakes Shard was online. I quickly got a message from a guildmate who was
home sick from work, offering greetings. I sent back a message that Led was
at school and his dad was working on his computer. We had a short ICQ
exchange in which I thanked this person for being so nice to my son. He
wrote back: "np. [no problem, in UO jargon] Led is very important to us."

This impressed me. 12 year olds can be useful, loved, lovable, friendly and
many other fine things. But few can say that they are "important" outside
of their family. In the online world of UO he is important to a number of
people. This is an achievement possible in few leisure activities and AFAIK
no other genre of computer games. So his secret mission of infiltrating a
rival guild continues. His reports to this point suggest the rival guild is
honorable and has no evil intentions towards the Knights. But who knows...
