Harder to develop to my mind (this depends entirely on your own skills), more of a hassle to use (I grumble at loading anything other than Lynx; particularly for communications orientated to a specific mud). Fancier, yes. This is not always a /good/ thing. Reliability is kinda irrelevant - I see no huge advantage to either situation, except the mud-based one will use standard situations which everyone accessing the mud will be able to cope with, while browsers differ hugely. > In that vain should help be web based? With minimal help in-game? Or do > you think that help is so critical that it should be on the mud? If I log into a game, and typing 'help <fairly obvious or partial topic name>' does not work, and one or two reasonable variations do not work, I leave. I will not visit a webpage to obtain help on a game (it's a hassle!). If basic help were available (or rather, all the help in a basic form), I might peruse an enhanced (hyperlinked, prettied up) version at my leisure. When I first log in, I want to know what I need to know in order to dive in. If you really want to provide these things in a fancy frontend, consider some sort of custom client (or add-on, for instance an application users can run, similar to ICQ, to access communicative areas of your mud with a special frontend, while the basic information is all still available to those who do not use it, through the normal mud FE). - -- -Matt Chatterley http://user.itl.net/~neddy/ "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.." -John Lennon (Imagine) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 5.0i for non-commercial use Charset: noconv iQB1AwUBNYPPG0sWGgRW8+MZAQFoLQL+Ld6dyeITmD4HhQQA6mRNxHKBJm/HGOKF WLx6eGhzbNmpkQVjEFPNyTCPPYwyiOrgrTKkAANOYb0HYlkI/J8UZYlpuZwkIajk Y8OVMaqTl86h0/NlLwlmYHJO/CY8mK+e =HZab -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Follow-Ups:

[MUD-Dev] stuff that makes me leave (was Re: In game bulletin...)

From: Dan Shiovitz <dbs#cs,wisc.edu>

References:

[MUD-Dev] In game bulletin boards vs. Web based.

From: Elis Pomales <pomales#caip,rutgers.edu>

Prev by Date: [MUD-Dev] Re: Levelless MUDs

Next by Date: [MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based.

Prev by thread: [MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based.

Next by thread: [MUD-Dev] stuff that makes me leave (was Re: In game bulletin...)

Index(es):

Date

Thread

Thread context:

[MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based., (continued)

[MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based., Robert Woods rwoods#nebula,honors.unr.edu, Wed 10 Jun 1998, 19:32 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based., Adam Wiggins adam#angel, com, Wed 10 Jun 1998, 20:23 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based., Holly Sommer hsommer#micro,ti.com, Wed 10 Jun 1998, 20:49 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based., Richard Woolcock KaVir#dial,pipex.com, Wed 10 Jun 1998, 23:14 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: In game bulletin boards vs. Web based., Matt Chatterley matt#mpc,dyn.ml.org, Sun 14 Jun 1998, 12:29 GMT

[MUD-Dev] stuff that makes me leave (was Re: In game bulletin...), Dan Shiovitz dbs#cs,wisc.edu, Sun 14 Jun 1998, 21:57 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: stuff that makes me leave, Richard Woolcock KaVir#dial,pipex.com, Sun 14 Jun 1998, 22:51 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: stuff that makes me leave, Mike Sellers mike#bignetwork, com, Mon 15 Jun 1998, 01:04 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: stuff that makes me leave, Robert Woods rwoods#nebula,honors.unr.edu, Mon 15 Jun 1998, 04:43 GMT

[ Other Periods | Other mailing lists | Search ]
