It also [Big snipples] Phew, been a while since I've been able to post. My dev team's solution for the 'currency' problem was to throw them all away. We use a 'barter' system, meaning that a 'coin' is a lump of substance with an actual (and inferred) value. A gold coin weighing twenty grams might have a value greater or less than 20g of gold in an area where said coin is recognised as legal tender. Outside these areas, it assumes its value as a lump of gold. The idea here is that when a currency is required (for instance, suitable silver coins for a Rome-like town), it can be added locally, and is useable globally (recognizable as the currency of this particular town or region). Any kind of object can also be valued and traded with Shopkeeps who will accept that type of item (grocers won't be interested in swords, for example). Incidentally, one of the nice effects here is that you can 'trade in' old gear for new gear, and then pay the 'balance' between them in money, rather than needing to explicitly sell items, get money, buy items, and pay money. - -- -Matt Chatterley http://user.itl.net/~neddy/ "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.." -John Lennon (Imagine) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 5.0i for non-commercial use Charset: noconv iQB1AwUBNXil9EsWGgRW8+MZAQGxbQL/Z163eyPn8wDV218V+PS36k+uhcwz4lSB ovovP0SPGnXcmofGAY22Pi305Hwc5gJ6szJECS6R8Or665CNFMoXnM9NKd2VeKex ffpc7kcXYbn2D4Lw7Yvr0uihW9xo1tz8 =emlr -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

References:

[MUD-Dev] (fwd) Re: Multiple currencies

From: J C Lawrence <claw#under,engr.sgi.com>

Prev by Date: [MUD-Dev] META: membership list

Next by Date: [MUD-Dev] Re: OT: ICQ hacks and exploits

Prev by thread: [MUD-Dev] (fwd) Re: Multiple currencies

Next by thread: [MUD-Dev] Re: [Mud-Dev] Playerkilling website

Index(es):

Date

Thread

Thread context:

[MUD-Dev] Re:(fwd) Re: Multiple currencies, (continued)

[MUD-Dev] Re:(fwd) Re: Multiple currencies, J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Fri 19 Jun 1998, 02:03 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re:(fwd) Re: Multiple currencies, Michael.Willey Michael.Willey#abnamro,com, Tue 16 Jun 1998, 14:43 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Exploring the guild phenomena, J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Wed 03 Jun 1998, 20:32 GMT
[MUD-Dev] (fwd) Re: Multiple currencies, J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Wed 03 Jun 1998, 17:37 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: (fwd) Re: Multiple currencies, Matt Chatterley matt#mpc,dyn.ml.org, Sat 06 Jun 1998, 01:17 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: [Mud-Dev] Playerkilling website, John Bertoglio alexb#internetcds,com, Tue 02 Jun 1998, 06:01 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Re: [Mud-Dev] Playerkilling website, J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Wed 03 Jun 1998, 20:10 GMT

<Possible follow-up(s)>

[MUD-Dev] Re: [Mud-Dev] Playerkilling website, Koster, Raph rkoster#origin,ea.com, Tue 02 Jun 1998, 17:12 GMT

[MUD-Dev] [Mud-Dev] Playerkilling website, Koster, Raph rkoster#origin,ea.com, Mon 01 Jun 1998, 22:37 GMT

[ Other Periods | Other mailing lists | Search ]
